A lot of the BG label stuff has been garbage in my experience. I had a couple of shirts that were ready for th garbage heap after a handful of wears and washes. I have not purchased anything recently so I do not know but I have pawed some of th BG dress shirts and they don't look anything special.

I saw BG label cashmere sweaters for $375. Seems a bit cheap for Cucinelli.

Alright, thanks. I was just curious. How much are, say the BG house label dress shirts? Nothing is listed on the website.

Isn't that the point for house labels: to offer higher quality products at discount prices?

No the point is to have a high profit margin on lower cost (to them) merchandise that they can sell for nearly the same price of their designer clothing.

So why does one chose the house label over a designer?

It is less expensive and usually marked down more heavily.

because he believes that it is really Brunello Cucinelli, but the store is doing him a huge favor by selling him the goods at such a low price.

And people view the retailer/store as a "brand" in itself carrying its own prestige and (in the case of BG) sensibility.
Also make good gifts to people who are not as (designer) label conscience.

Yeah. Come Christmas, I always buy Saks/Neiman/Bergdorf trinkets for the ladies in my family. They "ooh" and "aah" over the supposed quality of the items.

A few years ago Bergdorf was selling private label sweaters (some of the line, not all) made by Brunello Cucinelli and Avon Celli. They were about half the price of the branded sweaters which I always thought was sort of wierd/interesting. I have no idea if this is still happening. Given the rise in Cucinelli prices lately, I doubt it.
