i'm 6' 2" , can i get away with wearing a 42R as opposed to a 42L? Is the general rule just that the coat has to cover your ass?

I think it really depends on your proportions (e.g. leg length/inseam vs total height). I'm 6'2" too and could not wear R. I only wear L

I'm 6'2" and wear R. I'd never buy a L.

it really depends on the cut of the jacket (some brands run longer), and whether you are or aren't doing the thom browne aesthetic like the guy above.

I'm 6'1" and generally wear a long, but only get the shorter longs - ideally, from collar seam to the end of the jacket is about 32.5 inches or so (overall should be about 33.5 or something like that).

some of my jackets are regulars - all running a little longer than normal.

Obviously. But that's because you are specifically seeking a look with a shorter jacket than the "norm" or generally accepted length. It only makes it confusing for the OP if you don't explain that you wear Thom Browne suits with jackets that barely reach your wrist bones and trousers hemmed above your ankles

It really depends on your proportions; if you have longer legs than it would be easier to get away with wearing a regular length coat.

I'm 5'9" - 5'10" so I should wear a 38R but I prefer a 38S everytime. I think as some have said previously, it's all about proportions. I think on me the S jacket makes me look taller or rather emphasizes length. I have a somewhat short inseam at 30" and I think a R jacket makes me look stumpy in comparison.

I'm not quite 6'1" (or a bit over 6'0") and, depending on the cut, wear either an R or S... average torso, short arms and some 6'4" guys legs. So wear what fits... fully covers the nether regions without too much excess... and never, ever let a salesman tell you that at x height you are a S, R or L. For the average it's true, but very few of us are average

I'm 6'2", I usually take a long. The problem for me isn't the length of the coat; rather, I find it difficult find a coat with the sleeves long enough.

I would think you're probably a 38L/40L depending on the cut. That chart doesn't seem right to me. Especially given the shorter jackets of the day, I think you'd be more likely to want a long.
