I have become slightly obsessed with this operatic diva. Her tone is un-freaking-believable...an article I read described it as "creamy" and "silvery," which is quite accurate.

The control she exhibits at the top of her range is really unusual and impressive.

A few videos for the uninitiated:

Honestly, no "Biem Schlafengehen" is better. My god, an angel on earth.

She is amazing. Her Four Last Songs with Karajan are top class. Check out the Flagstad Biem on YouTube from the world premier (Furtwangler/Philharmonia and Dennis Brain on horn).

Oh my god I had no idea this existed. I read a newspaper article about it last year and was dying to hear Flagstad. She sings this so well...much better than Schwarzkopf (who gives a really dry reading IMO), but not quite at Janowitz's level.

BTW, Flagstad was 55 when she gave this performance. Talk about a timeless voice...

I've been revisiting Janowitz lately. Sublime.

Following video is from Act 3 of Weber's Der Freischutz. One YouTube commenter makes a good point: she sings bel canto, which is simply rare in today's age. Listen to her PERFECT phrasing and control, and then the absolute lightness in the upper register. It's magic.
