First day of work: Wear a suit?

I'm pretty sure I know what the answers are going to be, but I'm going to ask the question anyway.

I start work at a medium-sized Northern California law firm soon, and I'm not sure whether I should wear a suit on the first day.

Here's why I'm not sure: The dress code at the firm is business casual; people wear suits to meet with clients or go to court but otherwise do not. Also, since I've worked at this firm before (when I was a summer associate), it's not like I'm going to be meeting people for the first time -- they already know me. I'll be spending the day doing HR paperwork and other orientation-type tasks.

I know it wouldn't hurt to wear the suit even when no one else will be, and normally I would default to that, but it also just doesn't seem quite right to me in this situation. It's not like an interview, and since 1) I know what the dress code is, 2) I won't be wearing a suit to work on most other days, and 3) I've worked there before, I'm not sure.

If you know the atmosphere in the office already, you're probably in the best position to judge for yourself. That said, if you really think a suit would stand out, I might be inclined to go with khakis and a blazer.

That said, I'd probably still wear the suit and just take the jacket off when you get in. That way, you're prepared.

just to be safe. doesnt hurt to do that .
i rather dress up for people i know more than for people i havent met out of respect , actually. i think it would be a good idea.

Wear a suit (FWIW, I used the 'quickreply' button).

I think you should wear a suit. On the first day you might do things like have your picture taken for your security card, website, intranet, etc. You want to be wearing a suit for that kind of thing.

Guess you know what to do now. Everyone seems agreed that you wear the suit.

You should probably wear the suit - take your tie off when you arrive.

However if you are well known around the office then don't. You are best placed to judge that not us.

On top of what everyone else said, good practical point.

I'd wear the suit, I did this for my summer job and so did my coworker who started at the same time as I did. the HRM said it wasn't necessary when we arrived but by then it was too late. Better to overdress than underdress.

There was 1 man who started work and on his first day he came in with an untucked shirt and he had an unbuttoned collar without a tie. I would imagine to think it was embarrassing for him to walk around when everyone else was in a tie/shirt.

What? who the hell takes their tie off upon arriving at work in the morning? Why'd you put it on then, for the commute?

Suit sans tie if the suit is cut slim, otherwise suit and tie.
