Didn't he pretty much say, over and over, that the offer was rescinded for "confidential reasons" that neither the faculty nor the search committee were entitled to know, and that in reaching his decision he consulted "outside experts," the identities of whom were also confidential? It was painful to hear.

But as Manton said, the UC is PC--it is, after all, run out of SF (well, Oakland).

And on the bright side, it may mean 'SC has a shot at getting Chemerinsky back. . . .

Chemerinsky is an infuriating guy -- he infuriates me anyway -- but I don't think his credentials as a legal scholar are really in doubt.

I don't know. If I gave some school (say) $20 million to start a program in political philosophy, and they hired Stanley Fish to run it, I would definitely want my money back. But hopefully I would be smart enough to stipulate that in the terms of the gift.

This whole thing seems incompetently handled, at a minimum.

Definitely agree about the handling. I can see why one might find Chemerisnky infuriating. Not that it's terrible relevant in this context, but by all accounts -- and I know many people who know him well, although I have only met him briefly on a few occasions -- he's an incredibly decent guy on a personal level.
