New to the forum & dressing more fashionably - did well with my first run this spring/summer, but running into an issue with my cold-weather gear.

I'm 5'11, and a thin 185 - Usually look good in a L slim or tailored-fit shirt. I have some 40R tailored/slim fit suit coats which fit like a glove. Good so far.

However, when it comes to the tailored/slim blazers, I seem to be caught between a 40R (pulling on the buttons and bit of a triangle below) and a 42R (tent-ish). Tried on a million, so not sure why that would be.

So I searched for 41Rs, but that just led me to ebay. Those usually had something like a burlap patch or a leg sewn on an armhole.

What's the best advice - go with a 40 and have it taken out, or a 42 and have a tailor take it in? Never had anything tailored or adjusted before.

If going with a 40 & taking it out, how would I know when looking it over (offline or on) as to how much a tailor would have to work with so I don't burn a bunch of time on returns & trucking over to their shop? If a 42, how complicated/pricey does it get to have a tailor rework a blazer since they'd probably have to also mess with shoulders and possibly other areas to make it look right on my narrow frame?

Like I mentioned, new to the fashionable aspects of life so I've been going at it budget-fashionable. Yeah, for now that means invictas & bartering my skills for selvage (legal skills) so not trying to sound like a time-waster or cheapskate. Just trying to optimize my time/money/looks simultaneously.

Keep looking for jackets that fit, or get advice from somebody knowledgable who's actually in a room with you and the jackets.

How important is full vs half canvas to you for heavier sport jackets?
