In theory, what would be the argument while Pakistan and Israel are allowed not only nuclear programs but hundreds of nuclear bombs?
And in practice? who's going to do that? and who's going to deal with the repercussions? Do you just bomb Iran and go hell yeah and then what? you send troops? and Iran is supposedly not going to retaliate in the gulf? and Russia is just going to sit there and watch while its allies are bombed right next to it?
Funny enough, the nuclear program of Iran was started by the shah with american support and Khomeini after their islamic revolution stopped the program. It was restarted i believe after Iraq attacked Iran (with gulf and american support).
As long as Iran is dealt with as a regional power who has a say in regional matters that concern it, it doesnt need nuclear weapons. This is the best approach.
It didnt give Iran anything that it didnt already have. Hezballah, Iraq, Yemen, all happened while Iran was isolated and under sanctions.
