The former mujahahadeen was a very interesting person to hear from.
His name is Yasir Qadhi, and he's based in Memphis now. He's an interesting fellow, I think of Pakistani descent but born and raised in US. I have read some more of his stuff, so when he said that I took it in the context of what he's explained previously. When he talks about Islam and impediment to science, I believe he's differentiating between Islam and Muslims, indirectly implying that Muslims have indeed countless times derailed scientific progress. In fact he has a whole talk about so many absurd things that leaders and scholars have done, from the paranoia of an educated populace which led to prohibition of science/math, refusal to adopt the printing press meaning dissemination of information was at a crawl vs rest of world, early on even coffee was decreed as an abomination for some time...
This is the ex-Mujahid https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abdullah_Anas
and I agree with you, I felt that was the most relevant part to the whole story anyway. There are several stories like his, and they've all got asylum somewhere or other. But asylum is also granted to nuts like Altaf Hussain
who then rile the masses via skype.
