Taking a quick trip to Boston...

...will probably arrive late Tuesday (10:00pm or later), stay the night, go to a conference Wednesday until 4:30pm, then be at my leisure. Thursday; conference again until 4:30pm, then grab a flight back around 8:30pm, IMMSMC.

Was planning on taking in (part of) the Museum of Fine Arts Wednesday evening, followed by some food. Preference for a really, really, fine bar with excellent drinks -- classic atmosphere generally preferred, but open to anything. Was thinking Oak Bar. Any other suggestions on that count? And also for somewhere to get a bite and relax a touch after arriving late Tuesday. Any other 'musts' doable in the minimal time available? Traffic nightmares that will make me miss my departure? Will be staying in Needham.

Regards,
Huntsman

Oak Bar if you like room full of people, Federalist if you don't (truffle fries-m-mmm), Mistral (Columbus Ave.) if you like French cusine and nice bar scene(decent deserts).
Cigar Bar (boylston street) if you are into smoking cigars(only wines no hard liquor).
Elisabeth Gardner's museum would be my choice as oppose to MFA.

It is open, but renamed "Moo".
Has been renovated, but it's pretty much the same place.

go to the mexico v. brazil match. wear cutoff denim shorts, no shirt, and carry a drum. you're bound to have a good time.

Cigar Masters also has a very well-chosen list of Belgian beers. And the Gardner Museum, while spectacular, would never get my vote over the MFA for a first time visitor. That is especially true since the 1990 heist. I love the Gardner, but IMO, you get a much higher masterpiece to dollar ratio at the MFA.

Thanks for the tip on Mistral. That has become the definite spot for Wednesday night. Might try Oak anyway late tomorrow if I'm awake. MFA vs. EG advice is appreciated, but there are a few pieces I particularly desire to see in the MFA, so that swings the vote for me. It occurs to me that I am flying into Logan on 9/11. Sobering and a little disquieting. ~ Huntsman

Never been to Oak Bar, but my suggestion is the Bristol Lounge in the Four Seasons Hotel. My bar of choice in Boston.

Damn, I miss that place.

If you find problems getting into Mistral, try out their sister restaurant in the Theater district called Teatro-- I was a bartender at Mistral during my undergrad and sometimes getting a table is difficult-- plus they have a dress code where all men must wear sports jackets which sometimes puts a few kinks in the mix.

If not, there is a great place called The Foundation Room in Kenmore square that has live music and a great wine and drink list.

Have fun in Boston!

+1 for Teatro. Good food, but you must have table-mates. Teatro is not a good place if you are alone.
