This may sound silly, but as someone who grew up in Vermont and whose parents own a small business, my biggest problem with shopping at Target, Walmart, Costco, etc. are the social effects (and yet I'm a capitalism...I am fully aware of the inconsistency, thank you).
Color me dense - but I don't necessarily see an inconsistency in that. Capitalism and corporations do not necessarily go hand in hand. IMHO, small businesses are as much a part of the market economy as large corporations. The fundamental issue is that many people don't recognize that abstract things like service and experience have value in monetary terms. A good buyer for a small store can actually encourage a more efficient market, by making available niche products that the behemoths cannot. The problem with small businesses, though, is their dependency on individual competence is higher, whereas corporations can get by with employing scores of mediocre drones. (Steps off the soap box)
