Inexpensive Couch

Hey all, just got my new place and looking for a nice couch to round out my furniture. I was hoping to spend under $500, but I dont know much pricing, if it was compelling I could probably spend more. The apartment is fairly small, so not looking for anything too big/sectional/pull out bed etc. My taste tends to be more modern and minimal (I like things from Design within Reach vs. a large puffy pillowy type couch).

Any ideas where to begin my search? Im located in New York City.

Natuzzi makes modern-design, affordable leather sofas using top grain leather on the parts you sit on and lesser grain on the sides and back. This brings the price down considerably. I've had one for about six months now and it is my favorite place to sit. Alternatively, you might look to the Japanese or the Morrocans for low-priced, comfortable seating options.

Ikea. It's the H&M of furniture.

Also, find a cheap/free couch in the shape you like and throw a slipcover on it.

Natuzzi DOES NOT cost $500 new, even for a small couch. Their full size, three or four seater sofas retail for around $2000-3000 new depending on the model. I went through the hassel of buying new furniture at the beginning of the summer. The $500 price point is very difficult.

Thanks all for the input. I have looked around and 500 just doesnt seem to get me what I am looking for. If I were to up my budget to 1000 does anyone have suggestions on the best places for something clean and modern with a bit of style to it? I have thus far seen West Elm and CB2, both of which have adequate couches but they dont blow me away....

I saw a beautiful leather sofa the other day at Habitat For Humanity, one of the local thrift stores around here. They tend to get a more upscale kind of item. Maybe it's time to get creative.

We found them for $999.

$500 is tough, especially if you want something small. You could try Housing Works thrift stores, but I'd be cautious of craigslist and other thrift given the explosion of bedbugs in NYC in the last year or so.

IKEA is a pretty good way to go if you're just out of school. You aren't buying a couch for the next 20 years, so just get something cheap and functional. Perhaps Bo Concept or West Elm would work, but their quality is not much better than IKEA. I had the IKEA Klippan right out of school. It takes slipcovers, so when your friends spill on it, you won't want to shoot them.

Natuzzi has a lower-priced brand made in Brazil, think it's called Italsofa (??). They don't advertise the link between that brand and their main brand. You might need to venture to the outer burbs for a better selection of lower priced sofas. Manhattan is going to be geared towards higher end stuff.

"Tokyo Interior" makes some couches under the "Basic" line I personally like the no.3 love seat, but it would be better in a different material. It seems really 50s modern look. My great grandparents had one just like it when I was a kid, it was really old by then but still really boxy and avacado green. http://www.tokyointerior.co.jp/products/basic.html
