Sometimes Butler's pictures look like clothes the way that a model or an actor wears them rather than giving the impression of a real person living their life. This makes for beautiful pictures of beautiful clothes, which I appreciate as much as the next person, but it can come across as a little too calculated. In this case, of course the suit and boots are wonderful, but I don't like the tie or the square that much, and the Aston Martin is just trying too hard... In terms of the challenge, I think I prefer the 'lived-in' look that Cleav and Anden in particular project here, even though Butler's perfection is certainly something I admire and even aspire to. Contradictory? Perhaps.

The old '07' Mini Cooper S is very grateful for the "upgrade" and according to my wife, I'm still (occasionally) living my life! :fistbump:

Really interesting field this time. I did cast a vote for Papperskatt because his stuff, while initially coming across as utterly eccentric and non-SF, on further reflection actually does appear highly grounded in historical accuracy. It's a bold sartorial statement which runs against the grain of everything we normally hold dear - behold, for example the way P buttons his jacket - but it's a living expression of a past age, and I applaud the effort and courage required to pull such a look off.

jcmeyer looks really fine up on that roof. And Butler just hits one for six as always.

Ha ha, well clearly the outfit was so effective that I saw the Mini as an Aston Martin. I know I'm not a car person, but that is a bit ridiculous even for me. My apologies!

Thanks for the votes, dooders! Mine went to Anden and Choc this round but it's pretty hard to argue with Butler's suit... like even if you were right and the suit was wrong, the suit would still charm a jury into seeing things its way.

Thank you very much for the kind words.

Everything here is very interesting, and there’s a surprising range of things. Congratulations to all.

I’m posting partly to bump this back to the first page where it deserves to be and partly to say how much I like Anden’s thoughtful use of the light-dark continuum. Here’s his entry in grayscale:

Note the progression from darkest to lightest:

(1) shoes;
(2) trousers;
(3) jacket;
(4) sweater;
(5) shirt.

It doesn't force the eye to jump around but instead gently guides it upwards toward the face, which is as it should be. And notice how important the Cardigan is to the fit: it effectively mitigates the potentially problematic light jacket/dark trousers combination because with it the jacket is no longer the lightest component up top; imagine the outfit without the sweater and see if you agree that it wouldn’t be quite as good.

Cheers,

Ac
