Diet is 100% of the issue when it comes to gaining for anyone. And what he does in the weight room matters because he's not going to get upper body definition like he wants by just doing squats. Increase your healthy caloric intake, limit the alcohol and work your entire body. Try to do as many compound lifts as possible since isolation exercises are much less effective.

This has been my experience as well. Too bad the same thing can't be said about weeds, among others.
