How does Sutor Mantellassi sizing compare to the gold standard AE Park Avenue? Specifically, if I wear a 9D in the AE, what size should I go with in the Sutor Mantellassi?

not sure about Park Avenue's, but I have captoe AE Clifton's in 11.5D and my Sutor's are also 11.5 (med) and the Sutor's fit like a glove while the Clifton's, while my measured size, are just a bit loose

SMs are made using the Paris Pointe system. The ones in the US also have a wrongly converted US size stamped on them using this incorrect conversion system:

http://www.dancesport.uk.com/shoes/conchart.htm

The result is that if I buy a pair stamped with my usual US size, it feels about 1/4 to 1/2 size too big. If I buy my usual European (Paris Point) size, it fits perfectly and will come stamped with a converted size 1/2 US size smaller than my usual AE size.

None of this would have been a problem if they had used this conversion system:

http://www.geocities.com/handy_feet/shoesize.html

However, I have read many a comment here stating that SMs run true to the stamped US size. I too must admit that I can wear SMs stamped with my usual US size, it just fits a bit on the loose side but quite wearable with a light insole.

Conclusion: buy according to the stamped European Paris Pointe size if you know your European size. Otherwise consider dropping a 1/2 size down from the incorrectly converted stamped US size.

From trying on (not owning a pair), I also have found I fit the same as US size. This was in Neiman Marcus so I presume it was stamped for the US market

This is a very timely post for me.
I have a pair of SM loafers from STP that are marked my normal size (9.5). They fit great.

I just got a pair of SM laceups from Ian that are marked 9 (I'm guessing UK size) which I would think would equate to a 9.5 US, but they are HUGE. Big in every possible way.

Is it normal for there to be so much variation in their shoes? I"m guessing I'll need a full size smaller (8) to get these to fit.

Yes, there is last to last variability within a maker, often quite substantial too. With most makers, most lasts will run true to size but there will always be some with an odd fit.

The reason I asked the question is that my wife bought me a pair of these boots http://www.sierratradingpost.com/p/9...p-For-Men.html in a size 42.5 (marked US 9.5) from NM Last Call for $320. I hadn't had a chance to try them on because I was out of town until now. They seem a half size too big. Would you recommend I use a tongue pad or insole or both? I know that buying the smaller size would be the right answer, but they only had this one size and it was such a bargain I want to make it work.

That last looks the same as a pair of jodhpurs from SM I own. It runs true to the marked European (Paris Pointe) size. The stamped/converted US size feels about 1/4 - 1/2 size larger than an AE Nr 5 last shoe. However, a light insole should help make the fit snugger. The only concern on a monk styled boot would be whether the upper might feel a bit loose around the ankle (ie whether the strap allowed you to tighten up the upper enough).

Sator, thanks for the great advice. I ended up buying the thinnest insoles I could find and they made the fit spot-on. I've polished them up and now they're ready to go.

Resurrecting an ancient thread here!

So if I am a size 8.5D in the AE 5 last, my corresponding EU size in SM should be 41 or 41.5?

Speaking of SM, how come there isn't a SM Appreciation thread here??

Sorry for bumping such an old thread ...

I saw a pair of Sutor's online and it is stamped '10' on the bottom of the heel. Does this mean 10 in US or 10 in EU? There are no markings on the sides of the inner shoe either.

Cheers

I have six pairs of Sutors from STP and Shop the Finest and each and everyone has been marked only with the EU size.

So I guess it would be safe to say that these are a 10.5 (possibly a 11) US then, correct?

I wear a 10D in the Park Avenue, and I wear a 43 for Sutor. I would imagine you would wear a 42 if you are a 9 in the Park Ave.

I also have several pairs (blue soles) and all are marked 11 1/2 (US size) and 44 1/2 (UK size). Most of mine are from VCH and Stanley Korshak (Dallas).
