Lawless Denim & Co (Phoenix, Arizona)

vimeo_logo.png

Lawless Denim is a really fascinating company; especially in the current state of American denim when 85% of American made jeans (including many made by small kickstarted companies) are contracted out to one company to be made in one factory. Unlike many of the other companies, lawless makes there own jeans in their own factory and they aren’t stopping there, they have actually purchased several old shuttle looms are working to weave their own selvedge fabric in-house from sustainably grown Arizona pima cotton useing Arizona copper hardware to finish it off.

While Lawless is getting ready to weave their own denim they currently have jeans made from selvedge denim from the US(Cone Mills) and Japan.

In fact, I Just took a delivery of 18.5oz relaxed straight jeans… And I’m impressed.

Some of the features that caught my attention:

- Super heavy and soft selvedge fabric (extremely comfortable)

- Fully lined back pockets and watch pocket

- Nice copper rivets and buttons

- Triple stitching on inside on legs

- Belt loops sewn into waist band

- Heavy duck canvas pocket bags and lining

- Selvedge detailing on fly and watch pocket

- Beautifully executed stitching on fly

- Union Special Chain stitching (In the world of denim, vintage American sewing machines such the Union Special are highly coveted and widely considered to make the finest stitching around)

I’m seriously surprised and impressed with the level of quality, ruggedness, and attention to detail. I really love how they fit too. These truly are premium American made jeans. I’m super happy with these jeans and can’t wait to see what lawless comes up with next.

And let the thread begin!

i have a pair of black/black Italian selvedge on order from them. Had to give it a shot for 79 dollar semi-custom usa made jeans.

Any fit pics? Their construction details look nice.

Good question, they are actually working on getting land to grow organic Arizona pima cotton right now... Then they will weave the denim on their vintage shuttle looms in-house. It’s super exciting!

I have a few items being made including a pair of jeans & a work shirt so I have no direct experience with the products. I do like that you can basically choose exactly what you want made & Roman will do it. For instance I sourced some buttons & fabric for the lining of the pockets.

I don't know if its just me but I dig the idea that my purchases are being made specific to me unlike when you order a jean that came during a mass production which can go to anyone The kicker is you are getting something like that for $69 for a shirt & $79 for a pair of jeans That's also why I like buying things like wallets & belts from etsy where you buy something from some guy making things in his basement as orders come in. To me thats a personal touch not many denim brands can fabricate & if they are its $500

There are also some really great things about to hit the store with some great fabrics & styles. I saw one shirt fabric that is very similar to the Mister Freedom Chemise Calico print. Add on the Looms Roman is accumulating I am assuming will be put to use & you have potential for great things

I really wanna pick up a heavier denim. Something a little cheaper than most mid-tier stuff. This seems perfect.

I'm torn between slim straight, which seems a tad too slim and relaxed, which seems a tad too big.

On second thought, they have some terrible (and recent) reviews: http://www.yelp.com/biz/lawless-denim-and-co-phoenix

Makes me hesitate a bit.
The Yelp reviews are alarming because thats all there is but most of them are from people who had issues with the amount of time it took to make the item which I can deal with. I dont think they will have those issues especially since they now have over 50 people sewing.

No offence to the girl on Yelp who posted the review on her Denim jacket but with her chest size she doesn't belong wearing a short denim jacket like that let alone trying to button it . I think it was more of an issue with that than the jacket it self

That jacket should be worn by someone like this & notice the sleeve length on this jacket..they are short so that Yelper likely over exaggerated

I'm not concerned with the people who have issues with fit. I'm alarmed by the number of people who either didn't receive what they ordered or received something different than expected. In some cases, it seems as if products were supposed to be custom and were not.

I'm definitely intrigued. Like I said before, I'm looking for reasonably priced heavyweight denim. This fits the bill and the custom aspect makes them even more appealing. The only concern really is the service. Don't see those issues with say Gustin or UB. I wish a few more people here could attest to the quality and service.

This is what we are all waiting for. I have items on order that will be held up by the KS orders but like you said I think we want Lawless to succeed more than anything because its going to be such a viable option for Heavy weight denim & with full customization to top it off

Eagerly awaiting your eventual review.

Tempted to just take the plunge myself too.

I'm liking the look of that 15.2 oz cone mills denim backpack they've got. Tempted to pick one up...the price certainly is right.
