Zegna napoli couture shoes

What do people know or think of this line (Zegna Napoli Couture XXX Collection)?  According to the salesman at Saks it's made by Ferragamo.  Priced around $500 at retail. Example: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws....07&rd=1 I like the style of shoe, but do not know about quality.  Thanks in advance. Edit: Also according to the salesman at Saks, they are completely hand made (which I believe the soles say in Italian).

Yup. It's my understanding that they're made by Ferragamo, as well. Older Napoli Couture shoes were made by Mantellassi and were quite impressive. These aren't bad, but they don't blow me away.

The quality of the shoe is just fine. They're probably a half-step above regular Ferragamo. I don't think that they're a very good value at retail, and I don't think that the starting price of the eBay auction that you linked is a particularly good deal, either.

In shoes, as in everything else, there's handmade and there's handmade. The shoes are Blake-constructed and are closed by machine. Whether that machine constructs the shoes one at a time and is guided by a human, I don't know. I could believe that the shoes are clicked by hand and finished by hand, but again, I don't know. The shoes are attractive and well-made, but I think that you can do better for the price. Edit: Actually, the shoes are the result of a joint venture between Zegna and Ferragamo named Zefer (oh, the creativity). My assumption has always been that Zegna puts up the cash and Ferragamo makes the shoes, but I have no basis in fact for assuming that. More than one shoe guy has told me that Ferragamo doesn't actually produce anything anymore, but rather sources them made to Ferragamo's specifications from other producers. I don't have any independent confirmation of that, however.

Thanks for the quick response. I see it mentioned frequently, but is there a good webpage (or earlier thread) that discusses the difference between Blake and Goodyear construction in shoes? -shoe newbie

Take a look at this thread for some pictures and discussion. You can also do a search on Blake for a whole bunch of posts about this. There's nothing wrong with Blake construction, particularly for mid-level shoes such as these.
