As an eastcoaster, I'm very curious/envious about In n Out. Would someone be willing to post a InO lexicon or glossary of the various terms (e.g. animal style, double double, etc.)?

"3-by-3" = three meat patties and three slices of cheese. "4-by-4" = four meat patties and four slices of cheese. "2-by-4" = two meat patties and four slices of cheese. *Note: You can get a burger with as many meat patties or cheese slices as you want. Just tell the In-N-Out Burger cashier how many meat patties and how much cheese you want and that is what you'll get! For instance, if you want 6 pieces of meat and 10 pieces of cheese tell them you want a "6-by-10." "Double Meat" = like a Double Double without cheese. "3 by Meat" = three meat patties and no cheese. "Animal Style" = the meat is cooked and fried with mustard and then pickles are added, extra spread and grilled onions are added. "Animal Style Fries" = fries with cheese, spread, grilled onions and pickles (if you ask for them). "Protein Style" = for all you low-carbohydrate dieters, this is a burger with no bun (wrapped in lettuce). "Flying Dutchman" = two meat patties, two slices of melted cheese and nothing else - not even a bun! Fries "Well-Done" = extra crispy fries . . . even better than the regular! Fries "Light" = opposite of fries well-done, more raw than most people like 'em "Grilled Cheese" = no meat, just melted cheese, tomato, lettuce and spread on a bun. "Veggie Burger" = burger without the patty or cheese. Sometimes we call this the "Wish Burger." "Neapolitan" Shake = strawberry, vanilla and chocolate blended together.

Thanks!

So a Double Double is the same as a 2-by-2? Could you ask for a Triple Triple? Are the patties especially small?

I've had In N'Out before and wasn't as impressed as I was given the cult that surrounds them.

i would ship one out to you, on me, just for you to enjoy and taste for yourself.
only if there was a way to do this fast enough before the burger gets stale.

It's a completely different style of burger, but I've found that Five Guys, here on the East Coast, actually *almost* approaches In-N-Out levels of hamburger bliss. Not quite, but very close.

I dislike their fries, and it's not because they are fresh vs. frozen potatoes. It's the cooking method. If you cook fries a single time they come out like In-N-Out. If you cook them twice, in a process akin to the method used for Belgian frites, the fries develop the crunchy outer layer that In-N-Out fries lack even when ordered well done. I've eaten plenty of fries made from fresh potatoes that kick the crap out of In-N-Out's fries, and have the serum cholesterol levels to prove it (well, proof of quantity if not quality).

McDonald's fries are not freeze-dried, they are par-cooked before being frozen and shipped to the stores where they are cooked a second time. If you were to eliminate the step of freezing them between cookings, they'd improve in flavor and texture, but still would not resemble In-N-Out fries.

As a result of this thread, I had a craving for a burger... I ordered a 'Hamburger Union' burger for delivery, it cost me £17, and was frankly crap. When you want junk food you really cannot beat the US.

im not sure if in n out is hamburger bliss, but it is a fresh burger and lot of customer loyalty and cult following is due to the good business model it follows and approaches business differently than the mcdonald conglomerates and such.

it is an ok burger. im pretty sure there are alot of great and better mom and pop burger stands out there around me , but never took the time to find them out.

i just wish the patties on innout burgers were a bit bigger.

sometimes you order a few cheeseburgers and a few Doubledoubles for a whole bunch of persons and you end up having to manually opening up each bun to see if there is a second patty hidden in the burger to identify which ones are the doubles and the ones that are singles.
im pretty sure lot of persons here experienced this with In N oUt

i agree.

they are delicious when compared to fast-food or other $3 hamburgers, but they don't compare to a good homemade or restaurant hamburger. it's much ado about nothing.
