Are the bags made to last? Because, I had a timbuk2 bag and that bag crapped out on me in just 2.5 years.. kinda pissed. I'm looking for a replacement, and I found out about Chrome. Is the medium sufficient for just lugging all my school crap around?

I have a L Chrome (Metropolis) and it's a great bag - bombproof, very comfortable, functional. The L is pretty big - I can't imagine owning the XL - so medium should be fine.

Is it comfortable while walking too? I don't like to ride my bike that much anymore because its a friggin pain to tie it up at my school.

yuck

Chrome bags have become so ubiquitous around here (Portland), and I can't understand why...

a) They're ass ugly
b) All the people I know who have them CONSTANTLY are moving them up and down their shoulders because they're uncomfortable
c) UGLY UGLY UGLY UGLY

Mine is so big that I don't wear it walking, as it's just too bulky. I think a smaller one would be really comfortable though - the padded shoulder is really nice - and the quick release seatbelt also works great. Just make sure you know which shoulder you wear your bag on, as you either order a lefty or righty.

Gotcha, thanks so much. No one wears them that much over here...but then again I live in a ******* hick town >,<... I'm pretty much set on this chrome bag unless there is something as unique or sexy as it.

I wear my Chrome both walking around, and on my commute (20 miles round trip by bike) and it is really comfortable, even on the long trips, unless you really fill it up (books, laptop, etc...) in which case it feels wonky on the back after about 5 miles.

I would agree with LA Guy. I don't know if they're ubiquitous, but I do see them around a bit more than I'd like. But the construction is very good. I bought mine in 2003 (the large) and communted with it 20 mi per day for two years, took it on every trip I took during that time (including Europe & South America) and the thing practically still looks new. Don't load it up too much though. I wonder how the backpacks are.... They weren't available back then, but with my shoulders being wonky these days I'd be tempted to go the backpack route if I were in your position. But you're likely a young buck who thinks they'll never have back or shoulder issues. Live and learn and play on playa.

That about covers it.

Yeah, what he said. I use Timbuk2 still because, working in bike shops, I can always get them cheap. Mine have held up quite well for me (I have four) and I've never been dissapointed with one. That being said, if I wanted a true messenger bag (as in made for bicycle messengers) I would go with one of the above listed companies, my preference being ReLoad. I went to their factory/store in Seattle and their stuff is great and they will do custom designs. Prices are fair too.

I have a top of the line baileyworks bag, referenced above. I love it. Unless you're going to be riding with one, I do not suggest it, nor other "real" messenger bags. Like most dedicated, serious, messenger bags, they are designed to be carried only one way. If you just need a bag for carrying your school books around, get something else.
