1940 Interior-Richard Neutra

I picked up an interior decorating book from 1940. Some of the interiors are much more sparse than I expected. This is Richard Neutra, kind of suggests a Tiki on the deck.

One of the great interior decorating books is Jansen's Decoration:

I can't think of many things that would make me happier than a resurgence in real Tiki-chic. I don't mean beat up fake Hawaiian torches with fat men and beer, but rather a return to what Trader Vic's was like in it's hey day. That was very cool stuff.

I don't have any strong feelings about the Tiki look, but I did like the '50s and '60s trend of Spanish carved chests and red Chinese lacquered pieces. It looked quite nice among all the modernism.

What were those gigantic bowl drinks called? If I hadn't wasted so many brain cells at Trader Vics, I would remember myself and not have to ask you.

Sometimes, I have the impulse to do a really dated high concept interior--something that was really de luxe in its own era, but decidely out of place today. Like this smoked mirror bar, perhaps with lots of vintage McIntosh chromed hi-fi equipment nearby.

I think there is a coterie of Tiki pals out there. Isn't there a Tiki bar in SF? Years ago, when I lived in SF, I recall a bar where the waiters all wore fez. I wonder if that's still around. Someone told me that trader Vic had ion machines under the tables to make the patrons feel good, yes?

OMG -where do you find this stuff? I know what you mean, it would be so out it would be in, it would be Cougat. Lots of chromed covered vacuum tubes and interesting rotary phones in every room.

I found the images on a vintage dealers website: http://www.merrillantiques.com/ Here's another so out, it's in item--hanging mirrored glass vitrines: And this magnificent specimen of a bar: And this swinger's console set complete with some sort of free-form device that wouldn't look out of place in Brasilia:

Is there a shot of the bar interior? Great site...

Here we are: The marquetry is quite interesting: I imagine this bar to be in a pink marbled walled '50s city townhouse with an highly-grained Brazilian rosewood desk, chrome and zebra-skin chairs and perhaps lots of bronze fixtures.

I also really like this, the Knoll Showrooms in Mexico City circa 1961:

I just drove 1 -40 west then down and over to San Diego, there are some great mid century modern treasures in unexpected places along the way.
Low horizontal modern lines against tall vertical palm trees and intense sunlight. I want my next home to bring some of these elements together.
In the last month or two, there was a great example of this modern /Polynesian aesthetic in Architectural Digest.
