I'm in the early stages of building a website for my university's College Democrats chapter. Can anyone recommend a good (preferably free) HTML editor to build a site?

a lot of schools have software repositories that have dreamweaver or golive, etc. check there first. otherwise, just download it from torrents. not worth getting a ****** one. ms word has a crappy one.

QFT. You need something with the ability to work from a customized template or master page, plus something that can manage your CSS (if you use it) is indispensible.

Yeah, I'll be using CSS. I'll take a look at those two editors, thanks guys.

Yeah then you definitely want something that can color code it and do automatic style application. I've been using Microsoft Expression Web (the 60 day trial) and it's actually kind of baller. I'm going to buy it when the trial runs out.

In addition to looking at what software your school has, you could also just try asking whoever's in charge of student societies for a little grant for this purpose.

It's been years since I've built a website...which is more user-friendly, Expression or Dreamweaver?

Probably Expression. I've only toyed around with DW, but it's the super intense one that they make really large, complex websites in professionally. Expression is Microsoft's attempt to make a more legitimate web editor than FrontPage, but without attempting to capture the super high end DW market. Consequently, Expression is cheaper and more user friendly, though admittedly a bit less powerful. It still works really well, plus the WYSIWYG rendering is spot on.
