Vox does seem to bring out the crazy in people. Quite the enigma.

Far from becoming a classic right now, this thread seem to be disappearing up its own backside... so I guess it has a fair bit in common with grad students after all.

Relax. When someone has something to share, they will share it. Deja vu I feel right now...

I think it's because we sort of have 3 iterations of this stuff now - Noodles thread, this thread, whnay's thread ... I don't see enough distinction. Then there are sidebars in the 20 thumbs thread, too.

Not that it's a bad thing ... but it's a thing. And it may be why there are some slow news days.

Well, the whnay thread is dead right? So we can discount that yes?

The Noodles thread is more of a beginners help thread, with all kinds of nutty sidebars.

The 20 thumbs thread is a simple compendium, based on a clear designation of 20 thumbs, regardless of why the thumbs were issued, or how good or bad one may think the fit is, and anyone can made the additions, and even so, the conversation there is minimal, the cross-posting is the majority, and it serves as a great repository.

This is ostensibly supposed to be a thread where more seasoned folks share opinions on ostensibly better fits, and why they do or do not like them. A little more intellectual perhaps. This thread requires much more effort. It requires seeing something somewhere, remember that this thread exists, cross posting the thing you saw, and hopefully saying something useful about it that generates content, outside of whatever comments you may have already made where you saw the original fit. Its just more labor intensive.

There have been many threads like this, and various compendium threads, and they all have a hard time keeping steam. Its no ones fault, its just that it requires a bit more from users, and this is a hobbyist forum to begin with. Hopefully this thread has some more life to it, and people will hopefully make meaningful contributions, but it has to be organic, not forced.

My 2 cents anyways.

Let's talk about Clifton Webb's (playing Waldo Lydecker) tailoring in the movie "Laura." For the time being, I'm ignoring thoughts on suit / shirt / tie combinations and focused more on whether the suits and jackets are flattering to Webb. I'm refraining from posting the image of Webb sitting in a bathtub (Google it if you want, don't worry it's safe for work).

I think the suits do a good job of creating the image of a broader chest and broader shoulders vs. what Webb seems to otherwise have going. The trousers are a bit too high rise even for me, but interesting nonetheless.

Maybe not dead, maybe just on life support, with the family rethinking their "keep alive at all costs" attitude.

I miss it, though, because it wasn't just an analysis thread. There was a certain (if ill-defined) set of sartorial standards involved, accompanied by succinct opinions of whether or not something worked and why. It was brisk and avoided undue speculation.

I think this thread is appreciably different in its, uh, laborious consideration of a wide array of styles and manners of dress. It accepts diversity. It seems some are turned off by its lack of levity (snark?), and the potential for opinion to masquerade as information. Those are fair criticisms. I am still rooting for its survival.

I think Webb's suits were from Scholte? It's interesting to me how much stronger the shoulder is compared to modern lounge-style stuff, i.e Steed and A&S. I'm not sure those suits could look quite as full and draped without the extra structure. Very masculine. Not sure one could wear it on the street today without looking anachronistic, though.

The kind of discussion @in stitches describes fits better into a blog format IMHO. In threads the tendency to derail and be snarky is strong and the incentive to write something more considered is weak.

Wait, you mean people still come here to learn?

The Good Taste thread was really only alive for as long as the establishment commented on the posts. Manton et al had a point of view, and by extension the thread had a point of view. They also had a great deal of experience/knowledge to back up their opinions, so you could learn something.

That generation has stepped back and the next has not yet stepped forward. We'll get there.
