Vanda's prices are still pretty reasonable relative to the quality, and I'm sure they had good reasons, but I'm cheap (sort of). Pocket squares didn't go up much.

Here's the Cappelli: http://www.patriziocappelli.it/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=2_30&products_id=1810.

@Mr. Six

Are the exchange rates still favorable?

I quite like this one, reminds me of your brown Vanda wool tie:

According to the estimated USD prices on the site, it looks like prices went up a little bit, even accounting for the strong USD. It tend to remember the SGD prices, though, so I could be wrong.

I like that challis tie. Speaking of exchange rates, I think I'm going to put through an order with Cappelli to take advantage while the Euro zone is in turmoil. It's a good time to make purchases from a number of forum favorites.

That was fun: From the Cappelli site

Wools

Challis

Linens

Linen Cotton

As we were talking about Vanda's price increase (and agree with Mr. Six on their quality), the current exchange rates bring these ties to about 88 USDs. Am I dreaming? Not cheap, of course, but we are talking Cappellis here. A year ago, these would have been perhaps $120?

What is this mess about block stripes not being good with sport coats? They're maybe the best sport coat ties that aren't knits.

Evidence, David. Evidence.

Have to agree with D.. Block stripes especially. I would choose stripes over neats every time with all but formal suits.

I don't like those super wide block stripes, but narrower ones (say, about the scale of a Guards tie) are an obvious choice for me.

I think the extremely wide stripes don't work on those of us who are unusually small or large.

Just to be clear, I raised the issue about certain “louder” stripes being better worn with DB>SB, something I think is true for most paisleys. Of course, this is a matter of personal preference. There are many stripes that work well with sports coats so there was no claim against stripes.

I feel the same about louder block stripes (DB>SB), of which several examples were given. But YMMV.

For block stripes, I like less contrast between the stripes (e.g. the navy/brown from Cappelli that Mr. Six posted versus the navy/red), thinner stripes (cf. the Vanda versus the Cappellis).

@unbelragazzo @UrbanComposition

I'm happy for contrary evidence from your own fits.

I think @DocHolliday once described bold paisley ties as "casualties of the three-piece suit," in that they can be a bit much without a vest (or a DB) covering some of them.

Some examples:

This one is pretty nice, from Sander

I don't like this one from Benedict as much (I'm not picking on them, but they're selling some block stripes and they model their wares so...)

Perhaps YRR92's point about size is at play here.

Well, Doc often spoke with measured wisdom, IME. I'm happy to claim him as an ally.

I have a block stripe tie I'll wear tomorrow evening. Maybe Saturday, with a blazer.

Funny, for me, Benedikt's tie is the favourite.
