Curious, what's the process like when you commission a scent? Do you have "fittings" where you smell/wear a first draft for awhile before getting subsequent rounds of "revisions" where the perfumer will tweak the formula? How long does the process usually take?

 

Today is Nicolai New York for me.

Watch BBC Perfume Episode 2 where Christopher Brosius is hired by an Anglophile to produce a scent that smells like England. It happens in Part 2 of Epi 2 but the whole episode is worth watching - the whole series is really good.

Whats the best unscented deodorant to wear with a fragrance? I have mitchum unscented but its particularly rough on my skin; both the texture of it and the design of the tube is irritating. if I push it out enough to not scratch my skin, it breaks off... whats the best option?

Penhaligon's Violetta for me today. Fragrance is just what it purports to be--violet. There's some sweetness that's vaguely fruity, but other than that it's a pretty straightforward violet. I've been interested in violets lately, largely because of the launch of TF Violet Blonde.

Thanks for the links Willpower and Thomas. The BBC doc is well done as expected. I'll have to watch the other parts later. Interesting that the bespoke process includes sniffing a lot of the raw ingredients. Le Labo has a rack of the 48 (?) essentials in their store which I sampled when I was in NY last. Because each is so strong, I think it would be hard for me to pick out things I think would go well together. I guess that's the job of the scent maker...

 

CdG 2 Man today. This has a lemon verbena (vetiver?) thing going on which I sort of love/hate.

CdG is, IMHO, the most innovative fashion house also to do parfumery. they consistently make things that, even when I don't wear them, find them very interesting. 2 Man is the same. I'll join you in the "manly spice" category and go with Cartier Pasha. Where the CdG goes with a rather medicinal cedar/wood blend, the Cartier goes with a dose of mint.

Man, it was cool but I knew it would get back to the mid-80's later in the day so I dare not break out the heavy ambers, but I couldn't just pull a summer scent, either. This was one of those days where there are enough options in the herd to just shut down the forebrain and reach blindly into the closet for a bottle. (They're all hidden anyway - ALL OF THEM). As it turned out, I know where the Chanels are all grouped together, and wound up with Egoiste.

Though you know I'm no Egoiste fan, for that kind of weather it's one of the few that fits the bill. I know you don't do aldehydes much, but I also find them to be decent for that "in-between" kind of weather. Too hot and the powderiness kills... too cold and it feels like you've sprayed chalk on your skin.

I don't think I've worn anything even remotely powdery since I had that small bottle of PdN New York that reminded me of Trident gum and elicited nothing but derision from the Mrs. Was not for me, I suppose.

For as little temperate weather as we tend to get around here, I have an awful lot of those kinds of scents: Egoiste, L'Instant, Mr. Blass, Heritage, Habit Rouge - just off the top of my head. I probably ought to reshuffle the herd a bit and see what I neglected last year, and hopefully I can either make amends or just be rid of the surplus.
