Today wore Paco Rabanne PH. I'd only smelled it a few times and then saw a bottle on basenotes for sale for $12 so why not. It's alright, an alternative to Vetivers I geuss. I've put it alongside Anteaus and Creed BDP

Burberry "Touch" for what is most likely going to be a very, very long day.

Today - I would swear that I smelled Chanel Antaeus as I ran the roads this morning, so that's what I ended up wearing.

I'm not sure where the hell I've been, but before I started following this thread I had never heard of Chanel Antaeus. Now I've seen it pop up a few times and I'm getting curious. What kind of scent is it, does it last, where might I find it?

Chanel Antaeus is a typical 80's powerhouse of a scent. It's a woody/sage/cigar box scent, with a beeswax drydown (actually it's a bit more complicated than that, but not really the time for that). On me it lasts a full day, but I wear older bottles: newer ones I can't really say how long they go. As for where you'll find it: Chanel boutiques have it, I think Neimans and Nordstroms ought to carry it, some duty-free shops, and on-line retailers.

It's been out of fashion for a time, supplanted by the sterile, Cool Water '90s - but I like it and it wears well on me.

Today there's a thin layer of snow and it's crisp (-3?) outside. I need something warm and I don't have the headspace for anything I need to think about - Givenchy Pi EdT it is.

The 80's part of that is probably why I've never heard of it

I'm only 21.

I found a mini bottle of it on Ebay, maybe I'll give it a shot. Thanks for the input!

I've read a lot about the differences between vintage and reformulated Antaeus. Have you had chance to compare and see a meaningful difference? Also, I recall that it was reformulated in the early 80s. That means any vintage Anteaus would have to be at least 25 years old. I still see the stuff for sale on basenotes, and I'm surprised it would last that long.

Well, Chanel is typically tight-lipped, but here's what I've read: There are a few different vintages to speak of: apparently there was a first-run in a clear bottle (early 80's), after which it was changed a bit and put into the current black bottle. All of my stock is the 80's black bottle (at least, as best I can tell). From what Luca Turin says, Antaeus was then reformulated again in the mid-to-late 90's when they dialed back the beeswax absolute that shines in the drydown. This, I understand, was a cost issue - I was chatting with an amateur perfumer and he mentioned that BA had become outlandishly expensive ($75 an ounce, iirc). The 90's formula more or less carried on to the reasonably-current day, when the IFRA regulations encouraged the major houses (and some minor ones) to reformulate again to cut back on some banned substances (oakmoss, etc.)

Chanel has - from what I've read - reformulated most everything in their line-up accordingly, but I've not tested any of their current stuff. I've heard that No. 5 is a pale shadow of its old self, and I'm scared to see what they've done to Pour Monsieur. Need to get over to the Chanel boutique and assess the damage myself, actually.

As for age: depending on how they're stored, perfumes can last quite a while - decades, even -without much or any damage. Avoid light and heat, and you're set for a good long time (for most scents, that is).
