Penhaligon's English fern. Most of the scents from this company seem too stuffy if that makes sense...

BTW has anyone here tried the Martin Margiela fragrance? Not that anyone cares about clothing but I am surprised they came out with a cologne as the brand always seemed to be antipopularity/commercialism.

Coty Wild Woods

A vastly underappreciated scent IMO, and still available online

Today: trying out Rochas Man for a test drive, normally I'm not big on gourmands but this is quite good.

About Coty: some of their stuff is still decent, but I think they suffer from the generations of degradation of the classics: Chypre, Emeraude, etc. They used to command much more respect, much as Guerlain does today as far as the aficionados go. That said, they can still turn out a decent scent here and there.

Margiela seems to be treading the same ground as Helmut Lang a decade ago, when he decided nothing gave him the smell he wanted.

My bottle of Oud 27 turned up in the mail today, and I'm wearing a tiny bit of that as well. Does not play well with other scents, but smells like it did when I sampled it. Kind of rough for the first 15 minutes but after the salty/puky phase I rather like it.

Tried my first niche scent, Serge Lutens Un Bois Vanille. Liked the top (creme brulee, had to stop myself from nibbling on my wrists), absolutely loved the heart (a sharp amber came out of nowhere that complemented the creme brulee nicely giving it a more masculine feel). Base, however, I found to be a more of a light powdery vanilla, which felt too feminine to me.

Nice. I didn't get the salty/puky phase that you're talking about. I think that of the samples I tried, I'll end up getting bottles of Oud 27, Tea for Two, du Desert Morocain, and Une Rose Chypree. I'll probably start picking them off one at a time over the course of the next few months.

The dry down is not all that "masculine", which is fine by me!

I usually wear Polo Sport on a day to day most of the year, Philopsychos (sp) in spring and summer when I feel like being fancy, but I used to Have Versace The Dreamer back in the day and have been thinking about it lately. They sell it at sephora still though I thought it was a big bust n not that popular. what do you guys thinkof it?

I've got Polo Sport... if you like that, and want something similar try Bvlgari Aqua and/or the Marine version. I think PS is "ok", just not overly sophisticated... like I wore it when I was in high school and many guys just use it for gym or something.

Philosykos is really nice. I still can't quite get my head around it but will probably buy a bottle at some point. There are many "fig" note fragrances if you like that (I can give you a list) but I'm coming up on good recs that are similar

Not familiar enough with The Dreamer to comment...

I have a small bottle of The Dreamer, and I can't say that it does much for me. Too much going on at once for me to really like it. But at least I don't hate it.

...

Today - Le Labo Oud 27, and I must say that after Heritage and L'Instant - this is a slap to the face. Not nearly as baroque as your typical Guerlain with only 27 ingredients in the formula (the Guerlainade base probably has over 27 ingredients, but I digress) but this one really hooks into my pleasure centers.

Wearing Dolce & Gabbana The One today.

I'm actually expecting a bottle of Dreamer (along with Ungaro III) to be delivered today. I get a warm, sweet floral tobacco scent out of it. Just yesterday, however, I got a whiff of Dolce & Gabbana Pour Homme, where I found a citrus tobacco, that I now think I like better. Damn, this hobby is getting expensive...

I've concluded that some samples I bought on eBay are fakes.

I bought Terre Hermes and 4 different Creed samples and they are all weak and smell the same. On the other hand, my Eternity, Double Black, G Rouge and Angel Men all are strong and different.

Never thought samples would be profitable enough to fake, but I changed my mind.

^^^ a large part of the reason sample/decant sales were forbidden on ebay/basenotes. Sounds like they've relaxed those restrictions.

Could you guys recommend something for me to try?

I just finished a bottle of L'Occitane Eau du Badian and use M7. I loved Badian but it was very weak and didn't last very much on me. The M7 I love, but people around me apparently don't.
