Infusion d'iris EdP (Prada)

I like this one, but don't love it. As an "idea," I think it really goes well with Prada's overall image. Though it's been diluted (the image, not the juice) by a current brand strategy that is completely at odds with its initial offerings, nevertheless the scents are still pretty great. It's easy to forget these days with all the logo PRADA garbage out there made in China and beyond, but initially Prada was a no-logo luxury brand making incredibly high quality items from unique materials, a blend of techno and classical.

I think this fragrance is similar; it's got a very classic feel, with a powdery iris note, but then it's also got a unique sort of 21st century, post-modern vibe. It's definitely not a "classic" iris, like hermes Hiris, and it's also not a classic powdery scent (meaning, it's no Chanel no. 5) As such, I really like the scent and think they've done a good job with it. If you like powdery, and like iris, it's a great scent. I like, but don't love either, so I like the scent but wouldn't crawl ten miles to get it.

There's a new BBC - 3 Part Documentary called Perfume. Quite interesting. Episode 1 is mostly on Guerlain, Epi 2 is mostly Christopher Brosius (CB I Hate Perfume), Epi 3 is about marketing scents to different parts of the world.

By the way, I'm wearing Essence of John Galliano today (no Nazi). One of the great hidden bargains out there. Yes, it's a room spray, but it's still the best campfire incense scent on the market.

I just got a bottle of this... I'm making up decants of all my new purchases to forward along to someone in the swap box route so people can get a sniff of it...

Today - CB I Hate Perfume - Russian Caravan Tea - reminds me of Parfumerie General Ambre Russe (the tea note). Very nice simple tea scent, although now a skin scent just 3 hours later. Thanks for the decant KevinSP8.

I think that should be their slogan. "BE BORED TO TEARS... WITH CREED!"

Himalaya was dull, sweet, and "safe" to my nose. I had a whole bottle back years ago when Creedirect (who was the distributor back years ago in the USA) cleared out their inventory and you could get full testers for $30. For $30, it was a safe, sweet scent to wear to meetings. Never really developed, never really went anywhere, but didn't turn heads or do much. For $30, that's fine. For $200 or whatever they charge, it's a sin. I probably used 3-4 mls of it and swapped it on Bnotes for something much stinkier... glad to get it out of my collection.

The only Creeds that really surprised me were also the ones that they hardly distribute: Aubepine Acacia (a wonderfully odd metallic-y citrus), Ambre Canelle (sultry, cinammon, sexy amber... yes... sexy from Creed), Bois de santal (the best Creed ever... a stinky, civet-y sandalwood!)

It's 7:30 in the morning Japan time, so I haven't decided what to wear. Leaning towards Dior Dolce Vita, which in warm weather comes off as a slightly sweet fruit with a lot of cedar. I really like this one, as it does the cedar note without being too (pardon the pun) woodsy. It's a refined, delicate cedar, but definitely not overly feminine. At the same time, it's not an overly floral or sweet cedar, like Lutens Cedre (which, to my nose, is 99.5% tuberose, with a slight poof of cedar thrown in so the name sticks.)

EDIT: Changed my mind... when in a pinch on a sweltering, humid day... I go with Diorissimo. The world's best Lily. Not heavy, not light, not "girly," not "weird." A beautiful, real, floral scent with balance and kick that only Roudnitska could do. If you like scents like L'eau de l'artisan, or Sisley eau de campagne (sp?), or other grassy/fresh/crisp scents, give this a try. It's definitely a full-on lily, but it's not "sweet" like you'd expect. The problem with many current floral scents is that they flatten out the real flower scent and add sweet things like vanilla, tonka, etc. to make it "girly." My personal thought is that it probably is cheaper to do that than to buy actual floral absolute essences... but if you think about it... most real flower scents are not particularly sweet. They have a wet, earthy, dirt to them in addition to the floral scent. Diorissimo captures that really well, i find, without adding a lot of unnecessary "sweet."

Well, it was Aventus today. If you get the right batch, it'll still be going strong hours later. Pretty good stuff for the hot weather. Far too expensive though and only worth it if you get in on a split.

Going to dinner soon, so a change of Fragrance.

I think for the next week I'm going to start doing comparisons of scents I find in similar "families," to see how they develop. Tonight I'll wear Havana on one arm, and Pasha de Cartier on the other. I've always found them "similar" in a familial sense, so tonight I'll see if I'm crazy or if I was right.

Will comment tomorrow on what I find. First impression/spray is that I was right... they're really quite remarkably in the same vein... only the Havana goes unabashedly smokey/"rugged" with spice right in the top, while the cartier plays up a mint/lavender vibe to go for "classy" with the spice at the bottom Both are extremely masculine in a spicy, good way.

If you like one, you'll love the other. Pasha for your work meeting, Havana for drinks at the bar.

Another in a similar vein would be Azzaro pour homme. All oriental spicy/woody aromatic/aromatic fougere.

Edit: If only Havana had civet in it. Oh, wow, would it stink great.

Edit (2): As the evening developed, the spice hearts of each scent came out. As the mint and lavender of the Cartier diminished, both came close to each other. HOWEVER, it seems (just a guess) that perhaps each uses a different "kind" of sandalwood and patchouli, as Havana stays much smokier/"rougher" while the Cartier plays it more refined. This makes sense... there are many different patchoulis and sandalwoods on the market, some with rougher and some with smoother qualities.

BUT, in short, lovers of Havana ought to give Pasha a try for daywear.
