My bad. I was thinking JHL and wrote New West for some reason.

JHL would be another (with the Mechant Loup mentioned earlier) as a good summer night fragrance. For daytime, the stinky citruses work really well. Emporio armani he WHITE is another that I really quite liked (and I'm not generally an Armani fan.) It had a neat, intentionally synthetic/mod white musk note along with the citrus that was very satisfying. Anyway, it's sunny and almost spring-like today, so one has little choice but to break out Chamade as teh SOTD. (EdT strength)

I believe this is the first and only fragrance that I actually stopped mid-day to scrub off in the shower. Something about it was just nauseating to me.

I actually wrote a review of that one for a scent blog a few years back... I'll post it here. I considered the EA He (W) something like a THX-1138 of parfumerie...
In the 24th century, after the world has collapsed and has been reborn as some sort of sterile dystopian wonderland of bare white walls and windows that look inward onto a manmade garden (because on the other side of the walls are a barren desert), I think everybody will smell like Emporio Armani Him (White.) \tBut, I must admit a fascination with such a dystopia, though it’s ultimately boring. Beneath the surface of flatness and innocuous toadying is something disturbing and fiery that gives you hope that it, too, will come crashing down. \tAnyway, enough with the metaphors. \tI like this scent, yet I don’t know why. Or, rather, that’s incorrect. I know why, but it is still surprising because this typically is not a type of scent that I’d like. It’s synthetic, ozonic, fresh and a little citrusy, and intended to be very “pleasant.” These are scents (ala Jil Sander Pure and Jil Sander Sport) that I generally loathe. And yet, EA Him (White) is so pleasant and distinctly futuristic that something about it is fascinating to me, almost intoxicating. \tI wear it in the summer, taking that odd likewise 24th century metal/plastic/rubber/ceramic bottle with the subtly non-androgynous “male” bump on its side, with me on my travels, spritzing it on and enjoying the Soma. If Armani is fashion’s Brave New World, I suppose you must count me in as a member and give me my plain undyed cotton smock to wear with the rest of the comrades. \tThis is a scent we should all hate and fear as good Freedom Lovers and champions of the great Stinkers of History (Jicky, Rose Poivree, Kouros, L’autre), and yet it is just clever enough to make us think that among the millions of herded masses is one that’s going to throw the ax through the movie screen. Is it the White Musk at its base or the Thyme? Perhaps… but there is something here that still plays nice, but makes you take notice. \tSniff it. Everybody’s doing it.

Not to purposefully incite more Creed-based hate, but working my way through my samples of stuff and the Santal is actually something I could see purchasing.

And what really is the draw of true stinkers? Even something toned down like the Tom Ford Grey Vetiver, wouldn't get a good reception in my social circles (although it is growing on me).

It's really not Creed hate (okay, maybe it is!), but just going Creed feels like a person isn't trying hard enough (haha.) It's, for me, the world's most expensive compromise, like when somebody buys only Armani suits because (1) they are easy to find, (2) celebrities/advertising markets them well, and (3) they're expensive, which means they MUST be the best, right? They make some stinkers, though, and also some really off-kilter stuff in their more obscure collections. Orange Spice is hardly "GIT-pleasant." Ambre Canelle is a very sultry, almost dirty scent, Apepine Acacia (perhaps my favorite Creed) is an odd, metalic-y citrus, and bois du santal, another stand-out, is a rather pungent sandalwood without much sweetness. The draw of true stinkers, for me, is that they're more real, and they're more honest. Initially fragrance wasn't made to have you smell "good." I find the stinkers get back to the primal roots of parfumerie, and trigger evocations much more human in tone than trying to "mask" it in the odor of fresh laundry.

The only real stinker I have tried is Creed Orange Spice. It absolutely demanded my attention and wasn't some generically pleasant scent like many of the Creed's I have tried, and was ultimately a rewarding experience. I would like to try some of the other "challenging" Creed's mentioned above. Not boring!

Editions de Parfums VÃ

tiver Extraordinaire by Frederic Malle today. I was really looking forward to trying this and am not disappointed. An almost pungent dry moss and sage herbiness (I guess that is what vÃ

tiver actually smells like) with an earthy note. This must be the fragrance Bilbo Baggins wears. It is the fourth vÃ

tiver I have tried and it is by far the best. Four stars.

I think I just set a world record for "Most Dramatic Difference in Fragrances Worn on Consecutive Days."

Yesterday was Chanel No. 5 Eau Premiere. Very delicate and soft. A fragrance for the kind of guy who would coo and giggle with delight if someone called him cupcake.

Today it's Ungaro III. (I think it's the third formulation.) This is a big, boozy, manly power scent straight out of 1985. (Even though it's not out of 1985.) A fragrance for the kind of guy who barks orders in his oak-paneled conference room and makes high-stakes trades using his oversize cellular telephone. And who "checks his Rolodex" to "work his contacts." If anyone called me cupcake today, I'd have to send my private security detail to mete out swift justice.

(I've seen this described as dark and gothy, buy I'm not getting that at all. Maybe that's an earlier formulation?)

Yes you will! Sho is speaking a falsehood. In fact, I recommend that you wear SM to a fine restaurant. The other patrons will be so happy that you did, and they will thank you.

You should e-mail Etat Libre d'Orange and let them know you're the one person on Earth who likes it.

Yeah, I am kidding about wearing SM to a restaurant! I really do love the fragrance, but I'm self-aware enough to know that others feel very, very differently.

I have gifted SM to some people, and they've actually liked it. Unless they were lying to me, of course. I've seen lots of really terrible reaction, but I'm just not smelling what they're smelling. I can see why people might not like it, but I really don't pick up anything that's close to revolting.
