There's a review of Jour d'Hermes up at http://graindemusc.blogspot.com. It's impressionistic and poetic, but nonetheless I find that it corresponds to my experience.

Pre-shower: Kerosene Whips and Roses. (Inspired by Thomas's post.)
SOTD: MDCI Chypre Palatin. Sampling this for the second time today. It's every bit as good as the hype suggests, IMO. It's by Bertrand Duchaufour, who does a lot of L'Artisan Parfumeur's scents.

Yeah, he's about as indie as it gets. I think, right now, MiN carries him and that might be it - although he's also on FB and gets the word out through at least one group we're both in.

I'd wanted to try Whips and Roses, but never quite got to it. I've had to adjust my expectations of leather scents over the years, and now more or less shy away trying new entrants to the category.

I'd recommend it. Honestly, I was disappointed the first time I tried it because I was expecting something different. (I bought it because "Roses" was in the name and because the bottle is very attractive.) The top is very sharp; at first my nose interpreted it as freshly cut grass, but there' s nothing like that in the notes. I think it's just sharp citrus. The leather appears soon after, but it's a much higher-pitched, less luxurious and rich leather than I've encountered before. I'm at the point now where I enjoy it quite a bit.

admittedly true, but this is a different sort of scent. 34 is more of an all around winner where Cafe is more specific. and i already have rose 31 and voleur de roses to scratch my rose itch with.

SOTD: Vintage Eau Arpege.

I thought that this could work, given that vintage fragrances for women are often seen as too masculine nowadays, and because it seemed that this one has a fairly mellow floral component. The opening was really nice–a stong aldehydic burst (I thought of La Myrrh)e, but after that had dissipated, a powdery floral came out and stayed for good. Bummer.
