Biggest tip - in dollars

Since we're talking tips, maybe another way to pose this is what's the biggest tip you've ever left? In dollars? (Or yen, pounds, what have you?) Seems like this is more meaningful than %.

The biggest tip I've left for a single meal was $60 (20% on a $300). The biggest tip I've left was $200 for the maitre-de and kitchen staff at a restaurant I frequented while stationed in MA for work. I must have gone there 20 times over a two month period, and got to know the staff pretty well. So I dropped a few dollars just to say thank you.

When I worked as croupier in a casino to support myself through medical school I received a tip of just over $5,000 from a guy who frequented our casino. He reportedly carried a duffel bag full of cash that night and gave away all of it to the staff in fistfuls.

When asked, why is he doing it, he replyed: "My whore (wife) would spend it all on furs anyways"

I was sad to learn that he was killed later that year by a hand grenade thrown into his car by some mean people.

Sounds like the mean people might've been a little pissed about the empty duffel bag.

Likewise, I think the biggest tip I ever gave was $250 at a casino. I was playing with other people's money, and won, so it mattered very little to me.

I can't condone gambling with my own money. It just doesn't seem right.

heh well i don't know about giving, but i have received or witnessed some huge tips...my parents own a restaurant thats open for 6 weeks a year(track season in saratoga springs) and a cocktail waitress the other day got a $1000 on a $3000 check. I have received a $100 on a 20$ check with two cocktails on it. Ive seen a $50 tip to find a guy for a pack of cigarettes. The biggest(not including large parties) i can remember was $2000 on a $3000 check. And the biggest bill for two people ive seen was $1950.

When I was a valet several years ago at an expensive French restaurant I was given $120 for 6 cars that were all with one guy who was entertaining some of his overweight friends and the strippers he employed at a club he owned. One of the strippers was down to wearing the managers neck tie, which was tied around her pelvis like a thong, stilettos, and a dinner napkin wrapped around her chest at the table. They were seated in the corner and it was slow but apparently this was a regular occurence. At the end of the night she came down from the restaurant which was on the 11th floor to the parking garage where I was, stepped off the elevator, trotted over to me, promptly removed the napkin and the tie, and asked very politely that I return them to the manager.

Also possible, but I like the sound of Mogadishu.

When I was a pizza delivery chap, I got a $15 tip on a $12 or $13 order. That was awesome.

I tiped about 30% once on a $75 meal because our waitress got married the previous day. I felt sorry for her because she obviously wasn't enjoying a honeymoon.
