Are double monks played out?

Seems like they really hit the peak last year, and continue to rage on this year. Classic shoes, but they seem to be the new square-toed Kenneth Cole shoes. (Though better looking)

Absolutely everyone's wearing them.

It's a shame when technically 'classic' items become ubiquitous, but I would say yes, for the average dresser, they are played out. I prefer single monks—they somehow look more British to me, which is ideal, considering that my criteria for dressing is 'don't, for goodness' sake, look like an Italian'. I personally would avoid double monks like the plague.

Indeed.

However, it's hard not get caught up in this way of thinking when you're passionate about something. For what it's worth, I've never owned a pair of double monks, nor do I claim to have discovered them pre-trend.

To add a bit more to the original question, I think double monks can be worn convincingly by Butler-level dressers—those whose credibility you'd never question. But for mere mortals, it's advisable to avoid such items so as not to appear to be trend-hopping.

Yes, actually after seeing one of Butler's outfits is what had prompted me to purchase a pair of double monks in the first place. I just remember thinking that he made them look so good. Before that I had no opinion on them one way or another. I shall keep wearing mine though as I am quite fond of the pair I have.

Yes. If you're confident you can pull a certain item off, by all means wear. Otherwise, if you're having doubts, avoid.

I don't care; I dress mainly for myself.

Depends in part on the last, no? Anything more "aggressive" than, say, C&J 348 maybe looks on the trendy side. I like DMs, though, and will continue to wear them regardless of fashion trends. That said, I would challenge the original premise that they're becoming ubiquitous. i see them now and again (and far more often outside the US) but hardly something approaching ubiquity.

I always thought double monks looked best with very tailored pants (i.e. 1.5 - 2 inch cuff w/ 7 or < inch opening). I kind of considered them part and parcel...therefore, if the whole cropped pants thing were to die down, I would think that double monks would follow suit.

To me, double monks have always looked a bit off, and as such I hope to never own a pair. I do have a nice pair of Ferragamo Tramezza single monks though, and like them quite a bit.

Personally, I like DMs but would only wear in moderation and rotate them in once a week max.

I've noticed a small increase in their popularity in London too - but nowhere near as much as black tassled loafers.

I always thought DM's were cool. I recall seeing a beautiful pair of British Tan leather DM's on the top floor of Hermes in Paris where they had a bespoke shop in the mid 80's. I purchased my first pair of black Lobb Williams in 1999. I still have them and they look and feel fantastic (I think Lobb used the very finest leather of any shoemaker).

I could care less if GQ or anyone else says they are in or out of fashion. To me they will always be classic. I still wear them with grey flannels and well worn denim.
