I did hear that primer production was what was holding up most of the ammo and it's due to catch up soon, so aside from surplus, there should be more cheap stuff to be had again soon. Unfortunately the days of cheap .223 and .308 are most likely gone forever.

All the Walmarts I went to are completely out of just about everything but shotgun shells...which I am stocked up on. I sure wish some 9mm would come around. Dansammo.com is usually where I look for good deals.

2 of the local ranges want $20+ for 50 rounds of 9mm.

That's too much. I picked up 50 round of Blazer for about $8. Not the best ammo and I don't really recommend it except for practice shooting. I like Fiocchi personally and have Fiocchi hollowpoint loaded in my Glock, For just fun practice shooting, I tend to use the cheaper Blazer FMJ rounds and keep the Fiocchi hollowpoint loaded in the gun and in magazines at home. Would love to shoot the 8mm Mauser more but the ammo is getting expensive. Still have a couple thousand rounds sealed away, but would like to stock up more and keep that as reserves.

Cabellas also has relatively cheap 380. It is usually on back-order, but if you're will to wait a few weeks you'll be able to get Wolf for that price, S&B a few bucks cheaper and Fiorichi a little more. If you want bulk, this is also a good deal: http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/te...mmoSale*110609

Any gunshows coming up in your area? I usually buy my target and "small goods" at gunshows. Ordering mail order usually isn't worth it for small stuff like targets.

Actually there is one this weekend but I figured that after the $7 admission fee it would work itself out to be about the same price as buying it retail.

If I ever decide to get my FFL and open a store, I'm going to hire and train attractive young women for sales staff. That has to be a better option than rude, creepy dudes manning the booths at gun shows or the counters at gun stores.

Hooters with guns...

If you're in the market for a black rifle, btw, I think now is the time to buy. Colt LE6920 ARs are running $985 at local gun shows - down 40% from a few months back.

Seems like an excellent time to get my Christmas present.

I have to somewhat discourage using 'cheaper than dirt' unless you're really desperate, or in need of rarer cartridges. I had a female co-worker buy a box of 50 .380 rounds, and with their pricing and shipping, it came out to nearly $48. BTW....+1, on the Blazer brass, I shoot it all the time through my pistols, for the price I have had absolutely no problems. Monarch is another cheap brass round that's been pretty good to me at the range.

Buying ammo online is never a good idea unless you're doing it in bulk. UPS is the only carrier that accepts ammo shipments, so it's very expensive unless you've got a big package.

Went over to Gander Mountain yesterday. Handled the Springfield XD9m and it felt pretty good in the hand. Like the grip safety too. I need to find a range and rent out one of these bad boys to try out.

Most of the decent muffs ran $25 and eye protection ran about $10. I'll see after a few more sessions at the range if its worth the investment over the possible amount that I'll be using them.

I have the SigPRO pictured at the beginning of this thread. For the record it is great, ergonomics make 1 handed use easier than all metal Sigs.

Prior to buying my Beretta PX4, I was seriously considering the XD. I have yet to hear anything bad about them, if it fits your hand well, and your comfortable with it, I would highly suggest it. IMO, most of the polymers in the $500+ range are of quality, and should serve you well. However, I wouldn't consider buying from Gander Mountain, given the fact the grossly overprice their firearms.

+ 1

I'm just not a fan of plastic pistols in general, but loved shooting the XD45. Very nice ergonomics, well made, easy dis/assembly and cleaning and reliable.

Yeah, they're pretty damn overpriced. The problem is finding an FFL to have the gun transferred in to. I need to spend some more time at the range figuring out what's most comfortable. So far I've only ruled out the Glock 9mm which was too big for my hand.
