In East Timor (97) I had a Portuguese G3, but others had M16A1s, Indo FNCs and a few AKs.

interesting. I'm sorry I missed the bullpup, too.

the IDF used FN's but way before my time.

did you get to use the sister - the MAAG? that was a very nice weapon.

On another note, on firearms forums people so often list out their collection in their sig (does not seem sensible to me) -- on SF, it's what you're wearing....

I've only sorta noticed that on gun forums. Maybe they just list the one or two guns that are really modified and tricked out.

Car forums . . . now there's another story. You get the entire mod-list and entire car collection in every sig. Sometimes hotlinked to personal webpages.

Back then, the Aus army were still using "The Pig" (M60), though I read they were replaced with MAAGs a few years ago. We also had some 7.62 MG53s on the Leopard tanks. I never saw one up-close, but those tankers always joked about their Nazi machine guns! We had a few FN Minimis in East Timor, but without a lot of ammo they were just heavy/clumsy rifles. The FNC's were nice, though still heavy for a 5.56, compared to the M16A1s we had (ex-US Viet Nam War stocks diverted to Indonesia) EDIT: My high school cadet corp still had SMLEs for drill and shooting. My other rifle now is an Australian Lithgow 1943 SMLE. My great uncle was killed in Singapore during the invasion, while carrying one of these.

I really dig the bolt action on those. They're so smooth.

FALs have gotten reasonably cheap now that DSArms is building them with Australian parts on a US receiver (Stg58), but I can't bring myself to buy a .308 these days. Damn you, ammo costs.

It's fun to watch gun show ammo dealers try to push their horribly overpriced wares when Wal-Mart has a steady supply of Federal 9mm/.45/.223 at almost pre-panic prices.

IMO, it is criminal to see Royal Australian Army SLR parts mixed with metric FAL and US made stuff to create these FrankenFALs.

Huh, how much does Walmart have 9mm and .223 for? I haven't gone out shooting in awhile now due to the astronomical price increases for ammo.

Federal 9mm is $9.97/50 here.
I think .223 is $39.97/100 - not cheap, but I saw people trying to get $300/500 of Winchester .223 this weekend.

I'm pretty sure DSA is using all Austrian parts on their builds (not Australian, typo, oops). They've been making new production FALs for years and just intro'd this budget line.

Agreed, AIM Surplus had a bunch of new STG58s for $1,100 a few months ago. Couldn't resist picking one up. I'm going to get the 21" barrel chopped to 18" and threaded for a Gemtech HVT Bi-lock flash suppressor.

I hear ya on ammo costs, lucky for me I stocked up on South African 308 when it was cheap (2007).

I need to stop by Wally World and see what WWB 9mm is going for nowadays. Last time I bought a box, it was $13.97 for a box of 100...that was probably at least a year or two ago. I think I remember it doubling when metal prices spiked.

+ 1
I got a few cans back in '07.
Though I still cry a little every time I open a new SA battlepack.

I'm happy with what I have, but if I were to get another 7.62 battle rifle, I'd either do an Aussie SLR clone or an IDF heavy barrel FAL build.
