Ahh...a thread I can contribute to! MY stepfather runs a firearms supply company in his free time, which means every once in a while I get to go to the range with him and give feedback on some products. Last time we went, I got to play with these babies

On the left is a .338 AR-10 with an 8.5-24x variable zoom Leupold scope. On the right is an Armalite AR-15 in .223/5.56 with a 2-8x variable zoom scope and digital camo stock and grips. We tried to sight-in the AR-10 at 400 yards for a customer, but it was too hot that day. The target was wobbling too much in the scope from the heat waves.

I don't miss trying to deal with mirage problems especially during a match.

Been thinking about an interesting new squirrel gun. A Sig Mosquito with a silencer would be interesting. Oh wait, in about 6 or 7 months that will be a reality!

I shot my first gun last Sunday. Recoil was harder than I thought it would be...Turned me into a fan though.

if i don't live next to a dangerous neighborhood (for protection) and i don't go hunting animals (feel the need to kill things smaller than i am), is there any reason for me to get a gun?

1. They're great fun to shoot and tinker with.

2. They are fascinating mechanical artifacts. Some are very beautiful pieces of machinery.

3. Just because you don't live next to a dangerous neighborhood doesn't mean you are secure. You may remember a case in Connecticut a few years ago in which two punks invaded the home of a prominent doctor, beat him to a senseless pulp, raped and murdered his wife and two daughters and burned the house down on them. The doctor was able to escape from the burning house...but what a nightmarish trauma, what a tragic loss...and none of it probably would have happened had he confronted them with a gun in his hand.

 

 

Bears are much bigger than you are and you may run into one even when you're not hunting, as a point of clarification.  Otherwise, you've answered your own question.  Beyond that, you will find many opportunities to shoot competitively in a safe environment such as IPSC or IDPA.  It's a neuro-motor skill just like any other sport.  So if you're not a football/baseball/basketball player, sport shooting is another option.

Do you want one? Are you free of any felony convictions and a safe, mature and responsible adult willing to learn and practice firearms safety along with the other shooting skills?

Just a heads up for anyone that shoots 9mm. SGA Ammo has Remington Golden Saber for 11.95 a box (10.95 if you buy in bulk). I bought 250 rounds in March, and I'm shocked that they haven't sold out yet. I haven't seen defense ammo that cheap in a very long time. I guess it's probably worth checking out their price on Golden Saber in .45 and .40, too. I no longer have anything in .45 caliber, so I can't comment on how low their price is relatively to others - but I do know that their price on 9mm is ridiculously cheap.

Does anyone here purchase in bulk? I decided to buy just over 1,000 rounds of 9mm so I don't have to pay range prices in the future.

I buy all my ammo in bulk and usually from SG (there are some good deals at ammotogo but I pay state sales tax there, I get Russian 7n6 5.45 from USAARmorpycorp and Widners sometimes has cheap IMI 5.56).

Last time I ordered from SG they had some cool super-cheap 15G slugs. I bought 150rds and wish I'd got more as it is all gone. They also stock RIO, which is a great budget brand, but these slugs I got were incredibly cheap.

And most police officers are not very good shots, either. I will say that in the late '80s and early '90s, when most departments were transitioning from the revolver to the auto pistol, I would not infrequently be contacted by representative of various departments since I was the editor of Handguns magazine at the time. I would always ask them if their department had had any gunfights where the extra firepower of the high-capacity auto pistol would have made a difference. Invariably, the answer was a slightly sheepish, "No." I have heard it claimed that the biggest factor in the police transition to auto pistols was the popularity of "Miami Vice," in which the heroes packed automatics. Nearly all the stories I have heard in which auto-pistol-armed bad guys "outgunned" revolver-equipped cops would have ended differently, in all probability, had the police officers kept their heads and shot reasonably well.
