What is your style philosophy / What does your style revolve around?

Thread Starter
I've only been on this board a month or so, but its really interesting to see the various styles forum members have. One of the best things about this forum IMO is seeing people take various pieces from thrift, designer, etc and interpreting them in their own personal way.

With that in mind, what is your style philosophy, and what does your style revolve around?

Sorry if this question is vague, but hopefully these questions can help:

From who or where does style inspiration come from?

When dressing, what do you focus on the most? This could range from color-matching to silhouette, to trying to make your outfit as interesting as possible.

Do you base your outfits on certain key items (shoes, outerwear, shirts, jeans, etc)?

What attracts you to a certain brand? Do certain labels attract you because of..
the cut, quality of materials used, stitching, etc, the designer's ideologies behind the garments, or that label/designer's particular aesthetic?

Is there a designer that has been a particular inspiration for your style?

Do you drop down serious cash for basics or more edgy or fashion-forward pieces?

When looking at an item of clothing, how do you figure how much you are willing to spend on it?

When dressing do you prefer mixing different price ranges and brands or do you stick to a certain price point because you don't want to sacrifice a certain level of quality?

I'll post my answer in a little bit. Gonna make myself some breakfast.

I don't have a conscious style philosophy anymore. I suppose it's just ingrained/second nature, based on "The Look"

shite answer, sure....but I need to get going so I'll get back to this later

i like simple stuff. nothing loud. quality fabrics and denims. i really like a nice design though. for example, i fell in love with the adidas zx800 animal logos in black grey white when they came out last october, i put some some custom camo laces in and will kill anyone attempting to take them away for what ever reason. pleated anything must die, unless there hammer pants. j/k

^ Well actually I was joking. If I really did that, I wouldn't be taking style cues from this forum

It's interesting that variations on this thread keep coming up again and again. I guess Streetwear style seems so fluid and hard to pin down. I'm assuming n00bs start these threads because they're trying to learn in a more explicit way than synthesizing something out of WAYWT? That's to be commended, but I'm curious whether anyone feels these threads actually accomplish that? (If I were being critical, I could claim that this grasping for underlying theory is a rejection of the allegation that everyone in WAYWT dresses the same and that the style can be duplicated by tripping into an H&M.) Or is it just to give everyone an opportunity to reflect on themselves and get warm feelings by telling it to the ether?

Can you blame them for starting these topics, honestly? True, many users dress well without spending a fortune, but with some spending hundreds on Julius pants or Dior shoes, it's a bit intimidating. Not to mention the fact that it takes quite awhile to develop your style, a style that should keep developing.

I don't blame them at all: I really hope it helps them more than it helps me. Personally, I can't think of anything to say in these threads and find most of the other posts boring. Get Smart and LA Guy seem to have two of the most consistent styles around and occasionally they post something really fascinating about it, although it's often in threads where it's only obliquely on-topic. I guess it's worth trying a lot of questions in the hopes that one of them will trigger something interesting from someone like them.

I'm interested in clothing as a medium of aesthetic expression. I tend to approach it the same way I approach other mediums like writing and film. Pretty much everything proceeds from that. I have a few core aesthetics that interest me (on rather disparate from the others), and the pieces that I have fit into a coherent whole.

That's weird to say on a clothing forum, because that means you have no intrinsic interest in clothing...

Sure I have... but as big and important as it is, it is dwarfed by the interest on girls
