Is the navy blue blazer still a requirement in the wardrobe?

In the mix of workplace dresscodes allowing "business casual" varients, does a navy blue blazer still have a place in a man's wardrobe?

If so, how and when.

If not, elaborate on why it wouldn't work.

Yes, in fact I suggest more than one if you can swing it.

I have several and want one more.

The blue blazer is classic. It can be dressed up or down (grey flannel trousers or distressed jeans). It can be tossed around an airport when you just need extra pockets, or you can wear it in a pinch when you should be wearing something more formal.

Don't wear one around legislative buildings though....tourists always think you work there

Yes, it's one of the most versatile items you can wear. As crazyquik noted, it goes with almost anything.

I know that I should get one because of the versatility, but I just do not like them.

I want one but I am going to wait until I find the perfect one. Also, does most everyone agree that the buttons need to be gold?

It's one of my staples. I have several blazers and like another poster mentioned, quite versatile. I'm still looking for the perfect double breasted blazer though.

I think you can get away with something beside gold buttons (enameled, silver, pewter, etc) if they bother you, but without distinguishing buttons a blazer is just another orphaned suit or random jacket.

I think that it remains the most versatile piece that one can own and I think most people don't like them because they are almost always worn with gray trousers, white OCBD and a red and blue striped repp tie. You can pretty much wear a blazer with anything.

Yeah, thanks max. I have seen some blazers without the gold buttons (they were just plastic buttons I think) and the gold (or another metal like you mentioned) just looked so much better, and I think I will be sticking with that. I suppose if I find a super nice blazer at a thrift store or something I can always change out the buttons! =]

I don't think you'll find unanimity on that opinion. Still, I think a blazer demands gold buttons (or maybe silver); otherwise, all you have is a navy odd jacket.

Kinda odd how you put the question - you're essentially asking that with the rise of situations where you can wear a blue blazer to work, is there still a use for the blue blazer.

When you generally have to wear a suit, I think there is less use a blazer. But nowadays, it seems to be the default for those 'there's an outside chance I'll see a client' days.

In addition to the reasons mentined, I think it's useful for those in-between social settings where a suit would be too much (if you don't own casual suits) but where you should wear a tie.

Edit: I think silver-toned buttons work just as well and often look cooler.

I don't have one, but as Doc Holliday points out, that's largely because there a lot of naff ones out there and I've yet to find a nice looking one outside of an internet photo. Also, I wore one every weekday back at school and the connotation still persists for me, despite the passage of time.

I suppose I could always commission one that would meet Doc's "spectacular" criterion, but to be honest, it's way down my list of "needs". I do have a dark green blazer with enamel buttons that I use occasionally, so I guess I have that niche in the wardrobe covered by a different colour anyway.

It's probably one of the single most important items you can own.
