speakers for the computer

I'd like to buy a set of speakers to be able to listen to classical music and jazz while I work at the computer. Any recommendations? I'd prefer to spend less than $150.

If possible. If I just need to spend more money, though, by all means say so.
Also, I am currently using itunes (out of laziness). If I should be doing something else, feel free to give me the tutorial. I am open to advice and suggestions.

I'm unsure as what you mean by something else. Do you mean use another program due to usability and music manageability or due to how it actually transfers music onto the computer?

I checked around, listened to several, bought the bose from Circuit City. It is also at Sam's Club. About $200
Bose® Companion® 3 Multimedia Speaker System

Klipsch Promedia 2.1

$125 at Amazon, probably can be found cheaper elsewhere.

Awesome sound.

I'm using Logitech X-540(although ever since I reformatted, I can't seem to get them to work. need to find my discs that it came with) and I like 'em. But really that's all I can say for speakers. Headsets are a different story

Edifier S2.1D The speakers are ABSOLUTELY AMAZING for the price. Google reviews: http://www.google.ca/search?q=edifier+s2.1d+review I recommended them to my brother, and upon hearing them with a decent soundcard/DAC (Chaintech AV710 with Wolfson DAC), they were jaw-dropping for the price. The soundstage is huge, and the sub sounds big enough for movies and games, but still tight enough for music.

Let me understand: tou want speakers for your computer, not your hifi system?

Why would you want to spend $200? Yesterday I spent €16 on a Trust 2.1 speaker set with 22w and consists of two small speakers and a woofer. Fine. I listen to jazz, classical, everything, using itunes too.

BUMP - I also need speakers in similar price range or less. Has anyone's opinion on this changed in the last 3 years?

I have the Bose Companion 5....amazing sound....but pricey for a computer!!!
(Disclaimer-I got them for free by redeeming some AMEX points!)

Logitech just released a new 2.1 setup. If you really care about sound, don't bother with the computer part manufacturers and go with something better quality.

I like the Harman Kardon Soundsticks. Looks good, sounds good (to me at least). Should be able to find one for $110 shipped.

Metro, what kind of music do you plan on listening to? Are you looking for a balanced sound, lots o bass, gaming (lol)?

The M-Audio AV40 is $150 at B&H (amazon too if you prefer) and provide balanced and clear sound for a wide range of music. I would opt for something like a logitech z-2300 for Rap heavy playlists.

Personally I use a pair of 5.5" JBL bookshelves running from a Sonic Impact T-amp, and the old 8in Subwoofer (replaced original amp with a 200w Plate amp from Elemental Designs) from my now ancient logitech z-560 set. Fantastic sound but not a small or easy to put together project...lol.
