48 inch waist - am I out of luck on denim? - Page 4

Woah, I haven't seen you in a bit, and you went up to 300 lbs? Dude...

I got our last brother to get married in a Zegna dinner jacket. I am going to have to bring out the Rochester Big and Tall for you. Either that, or ask Shaq's mom for his grade 8 prom outfit.

I currently am a 44 waist (true size) and obviously am trying to cut that down as having a large waist size is bad for type 2 diabetes and what not. I have found that a lot of the American brands have much larger sizes. This is probably because they want people to feel slimmer. For example, I have a pair of size 40 DKNYs which are clearly much bigger than a 40. What you should do, and I have done this, is to take a measuring tape (the kind for making clothes) and then go different stores and actually measure the waist size. You'll find that there is a lot of variation of waist size in clothing.

That aside, I've found some decent jeans at places like Walmart, Zellers, etc. A point of advice... jeans that fit you look a lot better than jeans that are expensive and don't fit you. If you're on a semi-aggressive weight loss program, you'll find yourself losing at least 2 pounds a week, especially close to the beginning. As long as you stick to that program, you'll probably be down to 220 within half a year. You lose most of your weight around the stomach, hips, buttocks so you'll probably be fitting into a 36-38 (clothing size, not true size) at that 220. Anyway, keep us updated on your progress. It's always more fun to have people encouraging you. Right now, my fiancee put me on a weight loss program so I look good for our wedding next summer.

Anyway... much too much rambling... aight... peace.

Most (American) designers make waist sizes up to 38 (I know that 5EP and Rag&Bone both do, and both have rather forgiving sizing in some models). And there are plenty of decent, but perhaps not top tier companies that make jeans in a size 40 (Agave comes to mind.)

Good luck.

According to my size specs from Agave, they go to 42.
As for people being big, we have two customers who have 52 inch waists. They both stand 6'5 and weigh aprox. 280 to 300. Big waists but big guys. I make all their clothing for them.
I cannot believe how insensitive some of you have been to this guy. You truely should be ashamed of yourselves.

Doesn't really bother me. I'm a pretty tolerant guy and I can ignore the trash here without much of a problem. I'm a little surprised there is so much of it, though

I am happy with my weight and the progress I have made. I have huge shoulders, so when I tell my people my weight they have a little bit of a hard time believing I really weigh that much. I don't really have any issues from a self-confidence or health perspective, I just have developed an incredibly slow metabolism for a variety of reasons.

I am at a plateau these days, and with too much time in a plane and not enough time outside of work to put in the 3 to 5 days a week necessary to break through, it is a good stopping point to purchase some new clothes. When I drop some weight I will donate them to those less fortunate - really doesn't matter to me whether they are designer or not.

Finding shirts, shoes, jackets, even nice slacks has never been a problem - I can have these custom made as needed but for the most part I haven't had as much problem finding them as I've had finding stylish denim in nice wash/feel.

Thanks for those of you who offered suggestions. I look forward to making some more posts. I'll try to make sure not to forget my flameproof suit. I find it pretty incredible that for some people, you apparently have to be superthin to be stylish. What tripe. I bet I get more chicks.

Best,
a

One of the bad things about Al Gore's invention is that some choose to say things that they would never in a million years say to someone's face.

One of the comments before about certain companies wanting their clothing worn by certain ppl. does make sense. Not that I agree, but if they are wanting to put forth a slim image, it would go against that to make much above 36 (I'm right on that edge depending on brand).

If I was the size of the OP, I'd do the Levi's STF trick. Buy a few pairs, wash them as you lose weight, and buy again when you drop down a few sizes. Take some pics during the process to keep up the motivation.

Yeah... I still have a 6 inch drop, so I still look proportional.

5 foot 11 , 280 lbs and a 48 inch waist? Does that add up? 5 foot 11 and 280 sounds almost normal, but I feel like I have never seen a 48 inch waist

I wouldn't say 5'11 280lb is 'normal'. I'm that height and a little less than 150, waist is like 29-30. Well, what is a normal waist size? Like 32-34?

I don't know if it's normal or not, but I feel like I'm pretty average. I'm 5'11" and have fluctuated between 32 and 35 true waist as an adult. Size 43R jacket.

Have you looked at Casual Male XL for any mens jeans. They actually have a pretty good selection and have huge waist sizes. But you are right, a 48 x 30 is pretty rare. You could always just get them tailored.

Get the Levi 501 (other styles will also work) and get them slightly tapered ($10 at most) from below the knee on down to the hem. This will kill the grandpa look and allow you to roll cuff the bottoms. If your length is 30, get at least a 32 to allow for cuffing. You can usually find big jeans @ Marshall for less than $30 and even cheaper on the sale rack.

501 is too tapered for a big person.

I would recommend 559 Levi's.
