curious about somebody, looking for input from psycologist or neurologist

I am curious about somebody that I will be seeing, socially, for the foreseeable future.

he is a 50 year old man, who could be described as pretty ugly - thick forehead, very thick glasses, very bad teeth (sort of tiny teeth, and crooked). he is of basically normal, or even above normal intellegence, although not exceptional, lets say in the total IQ range of 120. college graduate, although finished school at 50, with the push of his wife. very nice and gentle man, very suportive and loving of his wife.

very shy, finds making eye contact difficult. talks very softly. very, very set in patterns - wears the same color clothes by the same manufacturers every day (dark green clothing from target), finds eating new foods painfully difficult, needs his wife (previously his mother) to serve him food - for instance, knows he likes dark meat chicken, but can't identify what part of the chicken is dark meat by himself and needs to be served), needs to be reminded to groom himself, not comfortable being alone in public (for instance, if his wife leaves him for a few minutes alone in the supermarket).

he almost strikes me as being a highly functioning autistic person, or having some other type of "syndrome" like that, but I am going only off of what I have learned from pop culture. does anybody who knows about this kind of thing have any insites?

The new buzzword from psychology today, and this guy's symptoms seem to fit decently within it, is Asperger's Syndrome.

Check it out: Asperger's Syndrome

Psychology is a really fuzzy field. It could be aspergers syndrome like said, however it also could be a multitude of other problems...

Some of the symptoms remind me of god-like mathematician Paul Erdős, who is sometimes retroactively diagnosed as autistic. (I don't think anyone diagnosed him in person: if the theorem machine ain't broke...)

According to my has-her-Masters-getting-her-PhD-in-Clinical-Psychology fiancee:

Not enough information to be able to diagnose, of course, but it sounds like possibly social anxiety disorder, maybe dependent personality disorder as well, and it may be that the social anxiety symptoms are due to something like something by Asperger's, but you'd need a lot more information to diagnose that. It could also be clinical depression, which would explain a lot of that as well.

Any inaccuracies in the above post are mine, not hers, since she just mentioned it as she walked through the room, and I'm trying to recount it accurately.
