My waist

So today I picked up a cloth measuring tape and measured my actual waist size. It was 35". I've been wearing some 33" Nudies that are frankly a bit baggy. I have to wear a belt with them. And I've been dropping weight (intentionally) so when I picked up some 5EPs last month I went for a 30. They are currently a bit tight, but they are not uncomfortable. But the fact that I've sized down 5! is a little much on paper. My question is, does anyone else have such a drastic difference between actually waist and jean size? For the record, I'm 5'10 and 163#. And yeah, I have a slight muffin top in the 30.

Depends on the jeans... I'm a 30.5" waist, and while I could wear a 30 in Helmut Lang, I go with a 31 (so I can tuck shirts in). Other jeans? Completely random, but most jeans I stick with a 30 and I'm doing alright. If you have any sort of muffin top effect, you seriously need to size up. Pudge ballooning outward is not a good look on anyone.

It's also going to depend on where you actually wear your jeans, they are typically meant to be worn lower then other pants. Also some companies size their waist differently then the measurements, so always go by fit rather then the actual number on the jeans.

I go strictly bespoke.

Jeans sizing is very "friendly" compared to dress pants and khakis, if the sizes run big it makes you feel skinny. Also, denim stretches a lot more than other fabrics, esp. after you've worn them 5-10 times. If you wash in warm water and dry in the dryer they'll be tight again, but then stretch out as you wear them.
