Poll: How Many Pairs of Shell Cordovan Shoes Do You Have? - Page 3

None but wish I could afford one of the Martegani ones recently posted. Cordovan is very low on the priority list at the moment but you guys don't make it easy.

Hopefully the LL Carmina shell bal boot project will be realized.

I've got one pair of Alden cordovan shoes and I have never worn it. I doubt I ever will. In fact I wish I had never bought it. I do not want to discredit anyone's love for cordovan whatsoever, but I know that it is not for me. What I particularly dislike is the uneven surface. Other than that, cordovan comes only in dark colors and it creates a humid chamber. I find calf prettier, more comfortable and more versatile, but - once again - that's just me.

One of my favorites - Alden chukkas in whiskey shell - about the color of EG Edwardian. Even the dark ones - new #8 - take on a broad palette of tones and colors with wear. It takes time and patience but the effect, to my eye, rivals any of my calf shoes.

I've got to admit that I never laid eyes on a pair in whiskey shell cordovan. Who knows, maybe I will change my mind in the close future ...

2 Allen Edmonds
1 Paul Stuart/Grenson

No reason to let those abominations take up valuable real estate in your closet. I'm sure a charitable SF'er would be more than willing to rid you of your never-worn Alden cordovans. If they happen to be of the size 9 variety, I could very well be that charitable SF'er.

blasphemous question of the day:

to the untrained eye, don't you think shell looks almost the same as cheap corrected grain leather?

especially a new corrected grain shoe

It can be hard to tell in pics, but in person, the difference is pretty clear. Shell has a glow that CG lacks. And with wear, CG often develops lots of fine creasing, while shell has none.

The people who couldn't tell the difference probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference between CG and better leather, anyway.
