Party etiquette "Coat and Tie"

Next week my wife and I will be attending a party where suggested attire is "Coat and Tie". While I've always interpreted this to mean a sport coat and nice trousers, I wonder if a suit is more appropriate? Does anyone have a rule of thumb here?

Yes, make sure you are wearing a coat and a tie. I"m sure that either suit or sportcoat w/ tie is fine.

this will be a great opportunity to sport your favorite suit and shoes and dress up for something.
