Selling a used car (complicated)

This is an area of life/common sense at which I am not good, so bear with me.

I have a nonfunctioning used car (needs transmission and a battery). It's currently parked on a surburban street with no meters, etc. I check on it every couple of days. It still has tags.

I made my final payment on it a three weeks ago, and I have not gotten anything from my bank. I have the title, but I think they have a lien (right?). I expect I should get something from them saying "congrats, you're done, you own your car." But I have not yet, and I haven't been able to get to my shitty bank during work hours/get through their ridiculous phone system.

I want to sell the car (for parts, I assume). In what order do I need to:

Turn in the tags.

Cancel the insurance.

Sell the car.

Also: Can I leave it parked on the street with no tags? I really don't like paying insurance on it, but I don't think I can cancel the insurance if it's still registered. Argh.

Sell the car first, the day it is being picked up, cancel the insurance and take the tags off. A tagless, license plate less car will be towed from the streets. Do not get rid of the insurance until you have signed over the title. If you have the title and it is only in your name (no "Lien Holder- Chase Manhattan), then your bank has done all that it needs to do.

Now, can I interest you in a 1996 VW Passat? As is/where is?

post an add on the vwvortex forums. Someone there will pick it up for sure. Is it an automatic or manual? What do you think is wrong with the tranny, perhaps its worthwhile to fix it up?

Thanks for the heads up, I did post on vwvortex.

Not sure what's wrong with the (automatic) transmission; it won't shift into second or fourth gear. The estimates I got were around $3k--so I just bought a new car.

If you are really adventurous, try putting in some regular (probably synthetic) motor oil into the tranny (I'm assuming it has a dipstick). It might be that the valves on your valvebody are stuck and this would free it up. You might consider changing the ATF afterwards (though that act might kill it too)

I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE ABOVE ADVICE THOUGH.

There is a lot of stuff you can do yourself on it if you'd like to try. There is a software called VAGCom that lets you monitor all the sensors in the car, its basically what the dealer has at their shop. You may not need to rebuild the tranny after all.
