It costs a few cents here for a short conversation such as this, and calling has always done wonders for me before. Of my first four orders, none ran into any problems a phone call would not solve in 2 weeks.

Unfortunately I cannot entirely support your statement any more. For my current (and 5th) order, the first one to have significant delays (7 months and counting), I called three times and have still not received anything.

I have 2 orders going on 4 months now. I don't care much about them, but maybe I'll call. Anyway, a while ago they put up an announcement on their website saying most old materials are out of stock (and also that new orders will take longer than 4 weeks). I'm doubting it, but will they contact you if they can't make the shirts you ordered because material's not in stock?

Maybe. Ricky did that with an order of mine, sending me a link to the most recent (and available) compendium of fabrics. That was probably 6 weeks ago and I haven't gotten the shirts yet (the order had been hanging out there for quite some time before I was informed they didn't have the fabrics). Or you could just remain in Jantzen limbo without hearing anything. You never know -- that's part of the fun.

In the past (for me anyhow) he held the order until I called and I gave him the number of a backup fabric for him to proceed. I'm not sure if he intended to contact me or knew I would call or what, but planning on Ricky contacting you is rarely a good course of action.

In my last order, I specified a cloth, but I also said that I'd take his nicest light blue solid, whatever it might be. Five months later, I still don't have a shirt.

Instead of seeing the glass half-empty, think of it in Heidegger terms. Right now, you may have (well, "have" may be too strong a word, let's say "have some claim to") a shirt in every shade of blue known to Jantzen.
Or maybe you have half a shirt in every color. Or a blue cat. Or something. I was going somewhere with this, but I'm tired . . .

Ricky owes me something like 5-6 shirts from three separate orders at the moment.

Or a la Schrödinger, your shirts are both on the way and have not been made. They are in a state of quantum superposition. However, if you interfere by asking about them they will revert to only one of the two states.

Calling certainly didn't work for me, other than for him to tell me he was too busy to work on my order.

A couple of more months have passed, two more email exchanges, a revision to the order because he ran out of stock, and still no shirts.

Frankly this service is moving into CF territory (sorry to resurrect that). The only diff is that Ricky doesn't have my money, but it is hugely annoying to have to wait months for something that is promised in a few weeks and can easily be done by others in that time frame.

I have come to the conclusion that Ricky doesn't want the internet business. He should shut it down and stop pretending that he cares.

That's who I meant. Damn dead European philosopher guys all look and sound the same to me. And that's why I never call Ricky, just wait in my state of quantum supershirtness.

It looks like we just need to find another good, but unreliable, shirtmaker that is entangled with Ricky at a quantum level.

A couple of months ago, they mentioned that they were changing the location of the factory. But that has been done for some time. I ordered some shirts on Tuesday and they did not mention that they were moving in the near future.

Well, I called them last night (about an hour after they opened for the day) and was less than impressed. Once I told the guy that I had placed an internet order, he asked me to call back later and hung up.

Well I think Ricky's Internet shirt business is dead, whether he realizes it or not and I think all of us would appreciate at least a "sorry, we're not taking online orders anymore". Whatever is causing the issue, it is becoming tiresome to address whatever issue they claim is holding up the order because another issue will arise once the previous issue is addressed.
