not to stir the pot, especially since I am the least jean versed of the contributors, but there are a lot of people that recommend washing jeans to improve their quality. Some swear by it because it re-tightens the weaving of the jeans, which makes for a better fit and more true fades. It can also stiffen jeans up, which again helps the fade. Just do over-do it. Until you know what to do and how often to do it (and this can vary by brand), don't wash them.
*EDIT* That being said, I don't wash my jeans much, either. To answer your question, I tend to hot soak at 3 months, and do subsequent washes as needed.

This is so trollish, but the post history, while uninformed, does not seem to be a troll...

I'll change my mind if the next thing he posts is "lol fuhk nudie they fade too much at least my american eagles don't."

Uh... I'll be the dissenter here. I wash my jeans whenever I would feel uncomfortable in not washing them, although I do baby my current pair (5ep LDB) a bit so I can hold this off for 6-8 months for some sick contrast. I'm soon going to buy a beataround pair of ~$150 jeans that I can do the blue-in-green experiment on. Gordon washed a pair of samurais every 2 weeks with a tumble dry included and after 6 months still had contrast, combs and whiskers, and pretty sick general fading all around.

Ummm...you don't read much of the streetwear forum, do you? BTW, I have a couple of pairs that haven't been washed in almost 2 years. I bought them when I started law school, and I'll wash them when I pass the bar exam.

Oh believe me I do but you don't have to believe everything you read. Congrats on your project. I'm sure they'll yield unbelievable results.
