I used to work around the corner from Sunset and went there quite a bit for their Mexican buffet. Pretty impressive list of beers they have there. The place next door, the White Horse Tavern, is hookup central for BU/BC sluts. Good times, good times.

I don't remember the White Horse specifically, but there were a lot of good bars in that area of Brighton back when I was living there. It's a good mid-way point between BC and BU, which probably accounts for the high number of bars and students who frequent them (all of whom, I'm sure, are 21 and over

).

3 Philosophers Belgian is one of my favorites. I'm partial to just about any of the Belgian styled ales.

PBR, Guinness Draught and Chimay are my go-to beers depending on the situation. I'll drink PBR at clubs on the cheap or out of cans or bottles on the cheap. If a place has Guinness on tap I'll take this over most anything, but refuse to drink it out of the bottle. And the same goes for Chimay. I'll take it over Guinness if someplace has it, yet unlike Guinness I will drink it at home out of a bottle (well, poured into a glass; you do not disrespect Chimay by gulping it out of the bottle). It's really not science and I'm an alcoholic that will drink most anything, but I think these are my big three.

Edit: Oh, I forgot to mention that regionally, I'll drink anything Dogfish Head. It seems to be a staple in the better places around DC, so I'm always drinking one of their brews.

My go-to beers are Guinness and Newcastle. I'm also a fan of Stella Artois, Pilsner Urquell, Beck's, Brooklyn Brown Ale, Brooklyn Chocolate Stout, Sam Adams, and St. Ambroise (a Montreal-based brewery).

I love Newcastle, also. I received a keg of it for my birthday last year and it was great.*

PBR and Yeungling are my favorite cheap goto beers - especially compared to the British cheap beers (Fosters, Carling, etc) which taste like bile and leave a chemical foam which doesn't wash off the glass.

Posh beers I'll just try whatever looks interesting on the menu, or drink liquor instead. Kreik (cherry beer) is delicious, but I can't find it anywhere here in the US.

I still drink Guinness, but it's usually in a situation at a bar where it's the only thing decent they have. Typically, for whatever reason, those places usually have Smithwick's, which I generally prefer. It's just that so many guys who hail Guiness as this amazing beer, often because they like the image associated with it as a guy's beer, have probably never had the really amazing stouts. But as I said, if you drank Guinness all through college, it probably has a value that far exceeds some object measure of quality. Or you might just really like it, if so, great for you, your beer is available nearly everywhere. I just find it bland by comparison to several which I can find readily at several liquor stores. If you go for the Dogfish Head stout, try the World Wide Stout. It's 18% alcohol and a pretty potent brew. Can't speak for their Chicory Stout as I've never had it. Rogue's Imperial Stout is fairly intense as well, with perhaps the strongest coffee taste of any stout I've ever had. And it comes in a cool bottle.

Out of all the really cheap beer at a bar, i'll drink miller lite. If the place has very limited selection and i don't want cheap piss beer, i'll have a blue moon, if i'm at a nice liquor store with a good selection, i'll experiment. Atwater Brewery's Vanilla Java Porter is really good though if anyone wanted to try it. As is Uninbrough's La Fin de Monde.

everything on my list is available at bevmo. yeah it's not the stuff that is shoved into the bar owner's faces but they are not rare at all. as far as california bar staples, stick with sierra nevada, anchor steam, or Franziskaner (spaten) hefe. 95% of bars around here, even dives, have at least one of those three. Also I think Newcastle is very good on tap. with those 4 you are probably looking at a 98% hit rate. These are all classic beers in near-exemplary styles. why so many barhoppers drink corona, guinness, rolling rock, heineken, pyramid hefe, i have no idea. those are terrible. really... Also I don't think coors lite, miller lite, et cetera are THAT bad. I would drink it with spicy food if it is served ICE COLD, it can be refreshing. But jeez, corona and heineken? *shudder* also I totally forgot about Paulaner and Ayinger, both brewers kick ass. and will knock you on the floor too. My love affair with beer probably really evolved when I started drinking Spaten Optimator. an absolute ass kicker of a doppelbock. It doesnt taste good to me any more (i seriously smell GAS fumes haha) but that was my gateway beer. here are 3 simple recommendations to you if you have NEVER tried anything other than frat beers. Just try ONE of them, I am really confident it will change your mind: Duvel Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout Ayinger Celebrator doppelbock you can get these at bevmo for sure, and most whole foods type stores. one last point. im blabbing now but I dont understand the point of cheap beers. I dont like drinking 6 or 10 beers at one sitting and thinking I did well somehow. I would rather have 2-4 which taste better, and are much stronger, sometimes 2x the abv, save your energy. yeah I like getting drunk.

I'm really surprised that you would throw Pyramid Hefeweizen in with those other beers. I certainly wouldn't consider it a barhopper staple (isn't hefeweizen always seen as being somewhat obscure?), and I think that Pyramid makes a quality beer. My wife is definitely not a beer drinker (hates Rolling Rock, Bud, Miller, Corona, Heineken, etc.) but actually really enjoys the Hefeweizen.
