Marrying rich.

People talk about it all the time, but how common is it?

I'm not necessarily talking about marrying solely for money (although there are obviously people who do that). It's more about how often you've seen your friends, relatives, whatever marry someone with a $7 million trust fund and a couple of Benzes to boot.

More interestingly, did anyone here on SF marry a significantly wealthier woman?

Generally rich people marry other rich people because they are in the same circles.

Sometimes I wish I had a largish trust fund, but the more I think about it the more I think I wouldn't be able to overcome innate laziness without the need to make money forcing my hand.

my uncle married an extremly rich woman - as in really really mind boggelingly rich. hard to say if he was happy - he was able to do a lot of fun stuff: produce a broadway show, collect a museum quality collection, travel, run a small art magazine. but I don't know if he was happy.

Nor would I but far too many of the people I know of my parents' friends who have spent their lives living off of a trust fund or some equivalent seem to suffer from some sort of existential dissatisfaction.

This isn't to say that everyone with enough money to not need to earn it is unhappy; if you can trick yourself into working on something it works out alright.

I know a guy at a golf course that inherited a lot of money. He does nothing and seems pretty happy. His daily routing consists of golf, birdwatching, practicing the piano, and going for a drink at the local pub.

If I had enough money i'd spend my days rock climbing and playing video games.

I'd certainly find ways to keep occupied.

I sometimes think of one of ernest's arguments, which sort of had a point -- that it's not your job that makes you a human being. I imagine you can find self-realization in a whole lot of other things.

At any rate, for all the money in the world, I'd rather have time, and that one can't buy.
