Gyms in NYC?

Of all the chains, Equinox is the only decent one from my experience. There are other smaller, nichy clubs but if you're looking for a multi-location gym, you should probably go with Equinox

If you don't care about the condition of the locker room/showers, NY Sports Club is fine and has lots of locations. Equinox is much better with regard to locker room/showers although their actual gym equipment is no better than NYSC's. Lots of Connie's friends work out at Equinox, though. Most places want you to sign a 1yr contract, but I'm sure you can negotiate on that point.

True but there are a lot more machines and it's less crowded, even at peak hours. On the flipside, I believe NYSC locations are open later at night (some 24h?) than Equinox's - for those who like a late night workout...

That actually completely depends on the location. They are opening an Equinox in Chelsea soon though - yay

Don't know but I walk by every other day (live in the neighborhood) and all I see is lots of buff men checking themselves and each other out. It's gay central. Could be fun, if that's what you're into

New York City's high-end David Barton Gym in Chelsea has been slapped with a lawsuit claiming gay sex is rampant in the locker room and David Barton, pictured, and his staff haven't stopped it. Plaintiff Carlos Sosa's lawyer, Brian Kennedy, says, "They represented themselves as a serious place where you actually work out, but it became a saucy steam room that reminds me of the ancient Roman baths." Sosa is seeking his membership fee back, and $25,000 for emotional distress.

saucy steam room probably isn't what the OP is looking for

What's that line about gambling from Casablanca again? What did Mr. Sosa think was going to happen at a gym in Chelsea?

I imagine that David Barton is very popular with women who are serious about working out.
