USPS express international or USPS priority international.

Has anybody ever shipped a package to Mexico.

I was there last week and I met a poor family that I thought I could help.

They needed everything. Clothes, dishes, toys, odds and ends etc..

So when I got back to Houston I put a bunch of stuff in a large U-Haul cardboard box.

Then I shopped shipping rates. That was the first surprise. The box weighed 38.5 Lbs. There was a lot of stuff in it ( nothing of very much value, but useful to them). Rates ranged from $541 with DHL!!!! to $111 with USPS. This was more than I wanted to spend, but I had promised to help them.

So I went to my main post office and mailed it on Sept. 2, via international priority for $111. The lady said it would take 6-10 days and there was no tracking # nor insurance available but she did give me the customs form tracking #.

Today,I thought it was time to start checking if it arrived so I called USPS this AM. I was on the phone for 2 hours! I determined that it arrived in Los Angeles on Sept. 5th. This was strange, since that is out of the way for a shipment from Houston to the Valley.

And than the shocker. Another USPS lady told me that the package then goes to Germany, which is the USPS International Mail transhipment point for the world! Has anybody ever heard of this?

So, even though, I was trying to mail it from Houston, Tx. to Reynosa , Mexico, a straight shot of about 300 miles, it's going to go from Houston to L.A. to Germany and then hopefully to Mexico. I will be surprised if they even get the package, let alone in 6-10 days. I can start an inquiry, but it must be after 7 days and today is one day short.

Has anyone ever encountered something this crazy?

PS: The package contained mostly stuff like toothbrushes and underwear. And toys for their kids. It's no wonder Mexico is so poor if they steal things like this.

I have never heard of the USPS international hub in Germany.

All my European shipments go directly from US to the destination country. At least, this is what shows on the tracking.

Does your tracking show Germany? Or this is just what the phone person told you>

I've always used USPS international and had excellent service up until a couple of months ago. I've had some very odd problems with delivery, not the usual held up in customs. I had a package going to Canada get sent to Spain, sent back to the U.S. and then to Canada. I've had another sent to Australia, cleared customs and now it's been "waiting to post" for nearly a month. I've never even heard of "waiting to post". Has anyone had issues like this lately?

USPS is the only reasonable solution for international shipping these days. UPS is extremely expensive for international.

What are people's customs experience with DHL? I'm thinking of buying a pair of shoes from the UK - price is below $200, shipping would be by DHL.

Would I experience any customs problems, or does DHL take care of that automatically in the price?

Would I be liable for duties and tariffs - I have no problem with paying, but I don't think I would be due any.

If I owe any duties and tariffs, how would I pay them, and how would I get informed about them?

DHL fucking sucks. I ordered jeans from blueingreensoho, and I live in Boston. It's taking them a WEEK to deliver it by ground, whereas UPS would deliver it in one business day. I found out it was due to a simple zip code error, but I called them three times to correct it, and each time they said it would come to next day. I've waited 3 days already and today it STILL hasn't come. avoid DHL at all costs.

I've read some horror stories about them too, but it could be something that just happen. Mistakes are bound to happen. Sometimes it gets stuck in the warehouse or whatever they have it

Thanks - I read that one too. My understanding is that USPS is the most reliable and cost-effective for international and this has been my experience. My question was more about potential delivery problems in Denmark.

is there tracking with USPS International delivery? or does delivery confirmation work just like a US package?

I'm told that you can get delivery confirmation with Express Mail, but not w/Priority.

To follow up, I ended up buying two pairs of trickers from their ebay factory store. Shipping was 35 GBP from the UK by DHL, got them in two days with no customs hassle. I was shocked at the speed.

I do live in a high rise apartment complex that signs for my packages, so that probably helped on the delivery side.
