If you have not enjoyed these games, you are not a sports fan. Period.

drama at the end and all, but it was a pretty lame and boring 89 minutes.

Well overall yes, Mexico fucked up. Should have kept up some pressure. Obvious that Netherlands were suffering in the heat. This was their first exposure to it. They had been playing in 22-25 celsius and 30-40% humidity. Today 29-30 and 50-60% - huge difference.

Why this was the first game to have official cooling breaks I have no idea. A number of Group D games were in 27-30 and 65-80% (even worse than today) and nothing.

Anyway, the PK was spot on and in fact Marquez was sloppy earlier and Robben actually didn't dive and took the shot. Silly because two Mexican defenders still had Robben boxed in.

Mexico overachieved all things considered but kudos to them for a good World Cup, Although I do hate all our CONCACAF latin american teams.

Go Greece! Thought that was never gonna come.

ROBBEN: 10/10
Robben exaggerated. I don't like him as a player (though I'm glad he's playing for my country). Fair is fair though, it was a foul. Not a huge one (like the one at the end of the first half) but a foul none the less. Therefore it was a penalty. https://vine.co/v/MFgBWT7j03K Netherlands should have had 2 penalties and Mexico 1 for the kick to the head. Clearly a foul too.

I thought the Greeks stopped writing epic tragedies over 2,000 years ago. Guess their soccer team did not get the memo.

They'd better make sure to guard the shrine of Testikles, demigod of squandered chances.

best part is that this really brings up an issue of video replays as well, no matter how many times people watch nobody will ever agree what actually happened.

marquez barely if at all touched him and he had already decided he was going down.

the reaction? this just pathetic:

robben has since apologized for his other dives in the match, but insisted the last one was actually a foul. yeah, like suarez admitting the first two times he bit the players but this last time he honestly just fell teeth-first into chiellini's shoulder

That pic just shows Robben being tripped.

Yes he 'sold it'
No its not sportsmanship
No I don't like players like that, even if they play for my country.

But, in this case i really can't see how one could argue that it was not a foul. Marquez did (barely) touch him. Therefore foul. Therefore penalty.
Football still has a lot to learn from sports like Field hockey, video ref.-wise.

I don't get the Suarez comparison. in the Suarez incident there just isn't any room for interpretation.

if you admit to doing the crime the first two times (biting/diving) then why should you have any credibility left when denying the third incident ?
i see the first pic as robben already preparing to fall before any contact, maybe that's not true but given his reputation and what he's since said...

i'm not fond of mexico either, so actually it doesn't bother me that they're out. i just hope that holland get knocked out in the semis (i don't know if CR have what it takes to keep going, and i am assuming Belgium/USA won't likely pull an upset of Argentina esp if messi keeps improving)

You canont base decisions on reputation or previous incidents or even take these into account.
Every incident should be judged as a new one and the only thing that matters is what happened. Just because a player is incredible doesn't mean he is wrong. the same works the other way round.
Suggesting a foul where there isn't one should be a yellow card at least but if there is one I have no problem if it is brought to the ref's attention.
Here there was a foul.

No one wants the girl who cried "wolf" too often to actually be eaten, even if she is annoying.

i just don't accept that it was a legitimate foul--so i guess let's agree to disagree.
