Unlike, say, Ty Cobb, Whitey Ford, or Gaylord Perry?

Betting aside, how was Rose "dirty" in a way that's significantly different from those guys?

I'm not sure Rose was dirtier than that bunch, Cobb in particular, but what he did to Ray Fosse in the 1970 All-Star game has to rank as one of baseball's most despicable acts.

I was under the impression that Rose began his slide head first and then pulled up when Fosse positioned himself in the third base line for the tag. Rose was agressive no doubt, but Fosse was illegally in the third base line. Whether or not it would have been kinder to slide can be debated, but Rose was under no obligation to get dirty. The guy only knew one gear and Fosse knew that.

I don't believe I've ever seen video of the collision. I never had a clear understanding whether it was a cheap shot or not. Comments from Fosse and Rose seem to suggest otherwise. But who knows? I tried to track down some video footage on youtube (I don't even know if the All Star game was televised in 1970) but was unsuccessful.
